Early 20th century manor house close to a town centre in the Aisne
Situated near to the town centre of a subprefecture in the French department of Aisne, less than an hour from Lille and Belgium and less than two hours from Paris and Brussels by motorway. The history and the economic activity of this town in Upper Picardy are linked to its situation at the crossroads of the main commercial routes. And benefiting from an exceptional communication network between the capital and the Benelux countries, the town combines both old rural history and a modern international outlook.
This impressive stone manor house stands in the middle of walled, wooded parklands of more than two hectares (4.94 acres), with a caretaker’s cottage and outbuildings. Its architecture reflects the style of the era, with its characteristic features such as the wrought iron railings, adorned with gold leaves, at the windows, the balconies on the facade and the rear side with its porch way and its rounded corners.
More than 600 m² (6,458 sq ft) of living space span three stories.
The ground floor includes an entrance hall, with its stairway and marble floor, a vestibule and a cloakroom with wainscoting and toilets.
On the left is a spacious, functional pantry with a storeroom, a back kitchen and a triple access leading upstairs, to the basement and outside.
On the right is a corridor providing access to a study, the walls of which are adorned with murals depicting Muses.
Opposite, double doors lead into a vast reception room with delicately carved, wooden walls and ceilings. In the lounge end is a stone fireplace, and at the other end, a large wooden stairway, adorned with a large stained glass window between the floors, which leads to the first floor and the bedrooms opening on to the mezzanine that looks down on this remarkable reception room. At the back, on either side of a brick-on-edge partition are two rare, massive, carved wooden doors opening on one side into a dining room with its finely decorated walls adorned with mirrors and prolonged by a bow window, and on the other side into a billiards room with its fireplace and floral paintings on the upper walls.
Between these two rooms, three large French windows provide access to the large rear porch way, the columns of which support a balcony terrace that looks down on the garden.
The main bedrooms are set out on the first floor, around the mezzanine with three French windows opening on to this large balcony. The inner surround is composed of an impressive wooden hand rail with finely chiselled corner knobs. Four large rooms, all with their own bathroom, including two with French windows opening on to the balcony, are individually decorated in a refined manner.
The second floor is more sober and is reached via the back stairs. With parquet flooring throughout, it comprises a large landing with an L-shaped corridor, 5 bedrooms, the biggest two of which have their own bathroom, a study and a linen room, from which a stairway leads up to the attic which could easily be converted.
A basement with a workshop, a laundry room, a wine cellar and a large room completes the property.
The walled parklands, spanning an exceptional town centre surface area of two hectares (4.94 acres), is a pleasant mixture of lawns featuring trimmed boxwood trees, separated by driveways that cross over one another under some majestic trees.
The outbuildings include a brick caretaker’s cottage at the entrance to the property as well as other annex buildings
A style, an era.
It would certainly be a difficult task to reproduce such a property nowadays, given the quality of the materials and the attention to detail throughout. All this in an interior design that presaged a new era, a new lifestyle that still prevails today. A genuine family home in an incredible setting in the centre of town.
