16th century manor house and its outbuildings in Upper Normandy

Location

Where Upper and Lower Normandy meet, close to the Ouche and Perche regions, the property, near to a village with 250 inhabitants, is approx. 140 km (88 miles) from Paris and Caen via the A28 and A13, 75 km (47 miles) from Deauville and 46 km (29 miles) from Evreux. The nearest French SNCF station is 20 km (13 miles) away.

Description

A long elegant driveway leads from the main road up to the property, a vast estate with almost 23 hectares (56.8 acres) of woods and plains. These history-filled surroundings abound with vestiges: those of a 17th century manor house, a water-filled moat and a dovecote, former hunting lodge. This attractive property is made complete by a vast chalet, guest house with large garages, a caretakers’ cottage, a swimming pool and its pool house, a tennis court and a stable with 2 loose boxes. The land is made up of lawns, meadows and woods, including a vegetable garden and an orchard.
The manor house with foundations dating back to the 16th century is the legacy of a local Seigneurie. Its flat tile covered gable roof features dormer windows with projecting eaves and hinged skylights. The facade, flanked by two hexagonal towers, has numerous small paned windows that let in natural day and sun light. Two of the sloping sides of the tower roofs feature Jacobin-style roof dormers. Barn door style reinforced shutters with strap hinges protect the windows.
The double landing porch way, providing access to the dwelling and featuring a hand rail, is topped by a door canopy. Under the porch way, a door leads to a basement cellar.
The inside of the dwelling is spacious. On both sides, right and left, the three stories are laid out identically as regards living rooms. A central stairway leads from the ground floor to the two upper floors.
Fully redesigned, the ground floor of the building comprises a large kitchen, a pantry, a dining room to the rear, a large lounge with a monumental fireplace.
The first and second floors total 9 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 3 shower rooms, 3 toilets and an attic which has not been converted.

The outbuildings
The chalet or guest house with its half-timbered, Normandy-style facade has an interlocking tile roof. The roof features shed dormers and dormers with projecting eaves. Each end of the building is topped on both sides with a hipped and open gable. The upstairs of this wonderful outbuilding, the decoration of which requires some attention, has 4 bedrooms, a large lounge, a kitchen, a shower room, a bathroom and a toilet.

The isolated, circular dovecote with a bell-turret dating from the 15th century is probably an old dovecote that was subsequently redesigned as a hunting lodge. Its tiled roof features roof dormers with projecting eaves. The bottom half of the facade is brick, the rest is rendered. The windows are semi-circular. Terracotta tiles cover the floor of the ground floor room which features a fireplace. A wonderful roofing framework is to be seen upstairs. The dovecote is accessed via a semi-circular doorway, featuring decorative bricks, that is closed by a small-paned door.

The caretakers’ cottage is of typical Normandy style with a half-timbered facade and a slate roof. A living room, a bathroom, a toilet and three bedrooms make up the dwelling. The swimming pool and pool house are situated on the side of the tennis court, out of sight of the manor house and the rest of the property.

Our opinion

A magnificent setting where peace and quiet and the lack of neighbours make relaxation and idleness the order of the day. A wonderful family home recently restored with contemporary home comforts. The guest house makes it possible to play host to numerous guests and could also be used for holiday or seasonal rental accommodation. The dwelling, perfectly situated in its parklands, looks out over its land. Given the extent of plains and woods, horses would be quite happy to caper about in the meadows.
