15th century listed castle on the banks of the Isle

Location

Situated in the heart of the Perigord region, a little more than an hour from Bordeaux, the property extends over a hillside dominating the peaceful river Isle. This beautiful valley has totally unspoilt countryside, alternating grasslands and farm lands. A region with great ecological wealth which also has the benefit of the Double and Landes forests, both of which contain numerous lakes and narrow streams. An ideal starting point when visiting the mecca of cultural and great outdoor tourism, and treating yourself to a gastronomical tour of the land of good restaurants.

Description

Currently situated on the outskirts of a hamlet, overlooking a railway line, today’s castle, built in the 15th and 16th centuries, succeeded a medieval retreat which in turn was built on the site of a former Gallo-Roman residence.
The building with French MH listing and its garden are enclosed by a high perimeter wall which includes an outstanding entrance as well as two tall watch towers.
This superbly elegant residence takes the form of a dwelling flanked by two large round towers, complete with machicolation.
The sober but welcoming inside (approx. 690 m² / 7,427 sq ft excluding cellars and attic space) is “in its original condition”, but can still be lived in.

Bordering the garden, a converted, two-storey annex building spans approx. 268 m² (2,885 sq ft).

The property, with its 7.5 ha (18.5 acres) outside of the perimeter wall, comprises parklands which are crossed by a long, lime-tree lined driveway, a swimming pool and a tennis court. A little way away stand an impressive barn, a two-storey guest house (approx. 190 m² / 2,045 sq ft) as well as a wine storehouse, once a chapel, linked to the building via an underground passageway.

Our opinion

Although the passing of a train was once an event that people took pleasure in watching, it is true that nowadays many see it as an inconvenience. And, yes, this delightful property has a railway line running alongside it: the most sceptical will therefore continue on their way, but others will certainly understand that a brief break in the silence now and again has no effect on the quality of life that is to be expected from such a historic residence with all its enviable assets in the heart of one of the most seductive settings.
