The origins of the property date back to 1301, date on which records mention an independent fiefdom belonging to a lord, comprising woods, meadows, cultivated and non-cultivated lands, quitrent and custom, justice and seigneury.
The castle stands on the boundary of a wood, on the outskirts of a Bourbonnais village. The property comprises a vast closed courtyard formed by outbuildings, a former Seigneurial dwelling built around a narrow closed courtyard, and a building built in the 19th century, opening on to parklands. The property entrance is marked by a lake and a massive round tower, former castle dovecote. To the south of the property, the parklands planted with trees of over a hundred years old feature a lake.
The entrance to the dwelling is still as it was in the 14th century, via double triangular arched doors, protected by a bartizan.
The ground floor comprises adjoining reception rooms, a vast kitchen and miscellaneous utility rooms.
A spiral stairway leads upstairs to several bedrooms of varying styles. The attic space is taken up by bedrooms for the domestic staff and one section with an amazing roofing framework resembling an inverted hull awaits conversion.
The vast outbuildings form a closed courtyard, completed by a dovecote which marks the entrance to the property.
The castle has two very distinctive styles: a 12th century feudal motte to which a pavilion was cleverly grafted in the 19th century. Major works undertaken in the 19th century have now made this a luminous and pleasant place to live in a historic, unspoilt setting.
