18th century castle set in 403 acres in South Burgundy
Location
In the heart of Burgundy, land of history and vine-growing “terroir”. This undulating land, full of small fields and hedges, has been developed and yet preserved by its inhabitants. A land particularly rich in preserved heritage with hundreds of Roman churches, castles and outstanding natural sites.
The region is easily accessed via motorway and the TGV train.
Small, well-known, dynamic town just over half a mile from the property. All amenities, schools and sixth form colleges just over half a mile away.
Description
Continuous estate of approx. 403 acres, 287 acres of which are woods.
The castle was built in the 18th century by a well-known architect on the foundations of a medieval stronghold, the outline of which still remains.
Access to the castle takes the form of a long tarmac driveway running through the centre of the estate.
The dwelling consists of a rectangular building comprising a ground floor, a first floor and an attic floor which is illuminated by bull’s eye windows in the sloping side of a slate hipped roof. It is built of local, extremely luminous, yellow, dressed stone.
A three bay projection standing out in the centre of the west facade contains three semi-circular arched French windows on the ground floor and three rectangular French windows leading on to a stone balcony on fluted supporting corbels with wrought iron railings upstairs. This projection is crowned with a pediment. That of the east facade contains a single bay, barely standing out from the façade’s alignment.
The main entrance door opens into a rectangular area. A small square building, the facade of which is topped with a large pediment, adjoins the north gable. A flat string course between the ground and first floors encircles the entire building.
The ground floor is given over to adjoining reception rooms and a suite.
The first floor comprises several suites. The second floor, under the rafters, comprises the former staff bedrooms, now fully restored.
Vast L-shaped service quarters are built to the north of the castle, a maisonette and a small working farm are approx. 330 yards away from the castle
Our opinion
This castle is a perfect example of the neo-classical style and constitutes a most harmonious architectural unit, illustrating incredible mastery of perspective and symmetry. Both forms and architectural features take their inspiration from Ancient Greek architecture. This 18th century fashion can be explained by the recent discovery of the site of Pompeii.
