19th century castle in south Burgundy

Location

In the country, in the north east of the French Saône & Loire department, in the heart of the Morvan regional nature park. In the birthplace of France, close to the mountain where Vercingétorix was proclaimed king of the United Gauls in 52 BC. In an undulating, wooded setting.
This part of the Saône & Loire was also a rich industrial and mining basin. Access to this unspoilt and modern countryside is easy via main road or TGV train. A station with lines to Paris and Geneva (respectively 80 and 100 minutes by TGV train) is 20 minutes away from the property. Chalon-sur-Saône (46,000 inhabitants) is 32 miles away. The village has shops with essential items.

Description

The property :
This locally well-known castle stands in 49 acres of parklands, woods and grasslands, stretching over both sides of a hill. Planted with trees of over one hundred years old and an oak plantation, it features two lakes. Tennis court, swimming pool and chapel. There is a magnificent unobstructed view of the surrounding area.
The castle is encircled by water-filled moats, forming a shelf.
The castle was predominantly built in the 19th century, but the older foundations were built by a rich local industrial family. Built on said complex foundations, the castle is basically U-shaped and spans 3 stories, each of approx. 6,458 sq ft. It has cellars running its full length. The facade features numerous wings, towers, turrets and balconies. The roof, also complex, has been completely restored. The main section is entirely decorated in Burgundy tiles with coloured motifs, bringing the famous hospices of Beaune to mind.
The inside has been preserved in its original condition, carefully maintained from the beginning. Numerous decorative features such as rich faiences, wainscoting, period fabrics and old fashioned bathrooms provide added splendour to the castle. The ground floor is given over to reception rooms and a flat.
The first floor is made up of suites. The second floor consists of a 6,458 sq ft area awaiting conversion.

Our opinion

Here, we have an architecture that perfectly illustrates the neo-gothic style which was very much in fashion during the 19th century. The layout of the reception rooms is theatrical with a series of decorative scenes and chromatic variations on both walls and ceilings. To these purely decorative factors can be added the sense of comfort which was developed in the 19th century and which forms a significant part of the internal organization of the castle. The richness of these decorations and their originality have been preserved despite the changes in styles. They are witness to a decorative art in architecture which was very short-lived.
