In the heart of the south-west of France, in the Lower Quercy, a region renowned for its peaceful way of life, the diversity of its countryside and the amazing architecture of its numerous villages.

Description

The property: In a very peaceful setting, in a dominant position and with almost 753 acres, it comprises parklands, meadows, fields, a natural forest (111 acres) planted with various species and an 11-acre lake. Four different lanes lead from the minor road skirting the estate up to the property: the main entrance gates with direct access to the castle, a driveway leading to the caretaker’s cottage and providing access to the rear of the annexe buildings, a second set of entrance gates which are not currently in use, and a driveway running from behind the forest through to the lake on the north side of the property. A family from the local nobility rebuilt the property in the 19th century on the foundations of a castle destroyed by fire. The property was totally self-sufficient as all the farming and breeding activities necessary to its good working order were concentrated on site. This explains, beyond the size of the castle, why the outbuildings are so vast. When the “last” count died without issue, the property was converted into a holiday centre. Numerous works were carried out in 1986, involving not only the roof but also the internal layout in order to bring the building into line with the standards applying to its activity that were in force. The holiday centre closed down in 1999.
Excluding the castle, numerous buildings span a total of 13,454 sq ft of living space, without taking the barn or the farm shed into account.
I - The castle (approx. 32,291 sq ft): is built with brick and stone bonding over a cellar. It spans a ground floor and three other floors as well as the attic under a slate Mansard roof with pediment topped roof dormers. The main facade is flanked by two projections. A majestic, two-flight stairway leads up to the first floor terrace on to which the reception rooms open.
II - The so-called “clock” building (approx. 5,059 sq ft): is situated to the north-west of the castle, at the end of a wide, tree-lined driveway. This rectangular building, with a central section forming a projection, has a rendered facade with brick-framed doors and windows. Its name comes from the large clock adorning its pediment. Two external stairways lead to the upper floor.
III - The building with the dovecote (approx. 6,458 sq ft): is built behind the clock building. This rectangular building spans one floor above the ground floor and continues into a dovecote set at right-angles, flanked by a covered passageway.
IV - The guest house (806 sq ft): This ground floor, rectangular building is on a slightly lower level than the dovecote and on the other side of the driveway. It has recently been refurbished with a kitchen, shower room and lounge.
V - The barn (approx. 4,305 sq ft).
VI - The caretaker’s cottage (1,022 sq ft).
VII - The farm shed (approx. 5,166 sq ft).
VIII - The dog kennel and the covered courtyard.

Our opinion

This large collection of buildings is in an unspoilt setting, protected by its 753 acres. The castle with its imposing air is the finest of them by far. The richness of the interior is highly representative of its era. Its originality, and sometimes the extravagance of its decor cannot leave any visitor indifferent even if the original layout has been turned somewhat “upside down” by its time as a holiday centre.
The floor surface area of the existing constructions makes it possible to envisage another professional activity.
