Small medieval castle in the Creuse Valley

Location

194 miles from Paris, 163 of which are on motorway, 16 miles from Châtellerault train station (putting Paris 80 minutes away by TGV train), 38 miles from Poitiers (airport with daily flights to London) and 31 miles from Futuroscope.
Just a few minutes from La Roche-Posay, between the Touraine to the north, Brenne to the east and Poitou to the south, in countryside that is still unspoilt and authentic: irregular-shaped fields separated by hedges and ditches peppered with small medieval villages.
In a dominant position, overlooking the valley with the Creuse gently flowing through it.

Description

This small, rectangular, 1.4 acre parcel of land is perched on a hill, in the lee of which shelters a hamlet and its few houses.
The castle stands right in the centre. The building makes ingenious use of the slope to surround itself with terraces; all sites where the sun can be enjoyed throughout the day.
Built on 11th century foundations that can clearly be seen in the cellar, half of the castle dates from the 14th century and half from the 16th century. The oldest part which could originally have been a keep, spans three stories and a converted attic; all are accessed via a wonderful spiral stairway housed in a hexagonal tower flanking the north-east corner of the building.
The 16th century extension built on the west side has but two stories and its own converted attic.
The castle is built of rubble stone which has been left exposed on certain facades and rendered on others. The windows are framed with freestone, reminding us that the Touraine region is not far away. A recent slate roof covers the 14th century section and the rest is covered with flat tiles.
Approx. 2,475 sq ft of living space includes a lounge / dining room, a reading and television room, a kitchen, 5 bedrooms and 4 bath or shower rooms.
There is no lack of period features both inside and outside the castle: mullioned windows, terracotta tiled floors, oak wood doors, window seats built into certain windows, monumental fireplaces, etc.

The outbuildings:
. Bread oven.
. Workshop.
. Boiler room.
A former barn in ruins, no longer featured in the land register, could be rebuilt.
A swimming pool to the south-east cannot be seen from the castle as it is on a slightly lower level.

Our opinion

True, this castle is modest in size but it has everything a big one has: a dominant position, spacious rooms with monumental fireplaces and a wonderful spiral stairway. With the addition of the important advantage of comfort that a good number of neighbouring, more imposing buildings envy.
This medieval building has managed to become a pleasant residence but has not lost its identity.
