Former 11th century fortress, redesigned in the 18th century, to the north of Lyon

Location

In the middle of the Dombes plains, a region with thousands of lakes. Where numerous inhabitants of Lyon and Geneva notably appreciate this holiday haven for its hiking trails, its gastronomy and its fishing.
These plains are also sought-after because of their ease of access: A6 motorway 10 minutes away, TGV train station, the nearby Lyon Saint Exupéry international airport and Lyon town centre not even 30 minutes away. All amenities are only a 5 minute walk away.

Description

This property with more than 6.5 acres comprises parklands with trees of over a hundred years old. With a vast lawn and terrace to the south, courtyard of honour to the north and former moats to the east. A chapel awaits restoration.
The origins of the castle date back to the 10th century. It was extended in the 12th century and redesigned in the 18th century. Modernisation works last took place in the 19th century.
The dwelling, built of local bricks in a square around an inner courtyard, still resembles a medieval fortress. This building has been partly restored; another section can be lived in but needs reorganising. Approx. 139,927 sq ft.
The ground floor is given over to reception rooms: entrance gallery, large lounge, small lounge, entrance hall/dining room, billiards room and large study. An indoor chapel adorned with frescoes, old kitchens, back kitchens and cellars. Marbled terracotta floor tiles, diamond-patterned parquet flooring, 18th century fireplaces with trumeau, wainscoting, wood panelling and indoor shutters.
The upper floors are accessed via a main stairway of Louis XIII architecture. It is wide with comfortable steps. Two straight flights are separated by a landing and set out around a supporting wall. This ribbed vault stairway is an unusual feature.
The first and second floors comprise suites and flats, some of which await rehabilitation. Diagonal parquet flooring, medieval terracotta tile floors, alcoves, wood panelling, indoor shutters and 18th and 19th century fireplaces.

Our opinion

This history-filled castle, witness to bloody altercations in the Middle Ages and the changes in society in the 18th century, has been lived in by the same family since the 15th century.
Currently divided into several flats, comprising numerous medieval and 18th century features, it could easily be reconverted to its original configuration.
