18th century house in an Aveyron village
The house is set in the heart of a village with about 500 inhabitants approx. 13 miles from Rodez (Air France and Ryan Air flights), 31 miles from Albi and 4 miles from a large village with all amenities. The village, known for its 12th century church probably fortified during the one hundred years war, is surrounded by unspoilt countryside of small fields and hedges. The solidly-built building, as wide as it is tall, contains some outstanding Baroque features and is subject to an annual pilgrimage dedicated to St Roch.
Built around a courtyard of approx. 3,229 sq ft, the house (3,767 sq ft) has all the attributes of a rich 18th century residence: the large entrance gates (bearing the date 1779) housed in a tall wooden framework with a “lauze” stone slab roof, opening on to the property with its south-east facing buildings, the entrance stairway leading up to the first floor, depressed arch windows and arcades leading to the service quarters and cellars.
Although the house was used as a farmhouse, it is far from being totally rural and has preserved a certain nobility that is clearly to be seen in its many internal features.
Under the porch at the top of the entrance stairway, the large panelled door, unquestionably Louis XV, opens into the main room, a type of rural living room, containing the essential fireplace as well as the alcove with its curves that are typical of the regional work in the late 18th century.
Through outstanding Louis XV wooden doors, this room leads both to the lounge, filled with peaceful light from the east, and to a collection of rooms (small kitchen, small lounges, etc.) as well as a corridor leading to a wooden stairway that goes up to the attic floor and its five bedrooms, a bathroom and the attic space awaiting conversion.
The ground floor comprises vast rooms, some of which are vaulted, cellars, former stables, pigsties, various storerooms and a bread oven, making it possible to envisage the reality of 18th century life in these buildings.
On the other side of the road, facing the large entrance gates is a large, partly walled garden (just over a third of an acre), at the entrance of which stood0 a house, currently in ruins, as well as a barn sheltering a bread oven.
Such modest buildings are sometimes surprising; and this one is no exception. In addition to the advantages provided by its situation and proximity to countryside which is unspoilt but not isolated, this house with its rare authenticity shows great nobility and a certain charm. The minor works as regards internal and external decoration and conversion will also enable the already very exciting rooms and features to be highlighted.
