17th century oil mill
near the Etang de Berre

Location

30 km (19 miles) from Marignane and Salon-de-Provence airports in a Medieval hilltop village above the Etang de Berre, where it is possible to explore a maze of small streets with old stone houses.

Description

This oil mill dates from 1658 but was partly modified, essentially on the outside, with the creation of a watch tower and a battlemented wall on the top of the building in 1930. It spans 480 m² (5,166 sq ft) of living space.
It is accessed by means of a carriage entrance which leads into a 70 m² (753 sq ft) wooded courtyard with a fountain.

On the ground floor, the west-facing entrance leads directly into a 170 m² (1,830 sq ft) vaulted room with fireplace. The vaults are supported by a large central pillar.
One side of the room features a well. At the back is a kitchen area leading to a cellar.
The north side comprises an additional room with beams and a vaulted room with fireplace and its own bathroom.
A coat-of-arms decorates the fireplace.

A stone stairway leads directly to the first floor and another 160 m² (1,722 sq ft) room with a central pillar and 2 arches; transformed in 1930, it currently features a coffered 4.5 m (14.8‘) high ceiling. It has a red wood parquet flooring.
A theatrical decor has been created with a baluster balcony on the south side and 2 columns opening on to a small stage on the north side.
The stage continues into a bathroom and a bedroom with a mezzanine.
A stairway leads from the main room up to a 200 m² (2,153 sq ft) roof terrace with a panoramic view. A space has been left in the centre for the installation of a jaccuzzi.

On the east side is a kitchen and a back kitchen with street access; from here a stairway leads up to a bedroom between floors (opening on to the indoor balcony), and a bedroom on the 2nd floor opening on to the terrace.

Our opinion

This mill has been transformed over the years, andt the rooms are still surprising but harmonious. It could be used as a home but would be ideal for a catering business with the 2 large rooms, the courtyard and the panoramic terrace.
