15th century mill in the foothills of the Cevennes mountains

Location

Near to Anduze, in the land of bamboo, in the French department of Gard, in the foothills of the Cevennes mountains, 49 km (31 miles) from Nîmes, not far from Uzès, and from Montpellier, in the countryside without being isolated. Schools and all shops 5 km (3 miles) away.

Description

The property
With almost a hectare (9,952 m² / 2.46 acres) of flat land, bordered on one side by a wide stream and on the other by a ditch that carries the overflow from the mill, the property is accessed via gates that open on to a narrow road. It is planted with all sorts of ornamental and fruit trees, under which currently gambol the animals from the small family menagerie. The water for the mill arrives in a canal with water rights, but the majority of its feed is provided by a large nearby source.

The mill
The origins of this mill date back to the 15th century. The mechanics of this oil mill, olive oil to be exact, have been kept intact (turbine, grinding wheel and press).

Preceded by the 1.50 m (4.9 ft) deep retention pond that permanently contains 750 m3 (981 yd3) of water, the current building with its pointed stone walls was no doubt redesigned or rebuilt over the years; the layout is asymmetrical to say the least and features vaults and exposed roofing frameworks.

Approx. 340 m² (3,660 sq ft) of living space is divided into a large entrance hall, a vast lounge of more than 80 m² (861 sq ft) with a very high ceiling, a fitted kitchen, 3 bedrooms and a cellar, a toilet and a bathroom. A summer kitchen, pool house and shower room adjoin the house and look out on to the swimming pool terrace.
On one side of the lounge, a few steps lead to a floor with two bedrooms, one of which opens on to a vast terrace; the other spans 60 m² (646 sq ft) and has a mezzanine, a fireplace and an independent entrance. The superb tiled roof features photovoltaic panels, proof of an awareness of the need to align aesthetics with ecology.

Our opinion

In this setting of hills with their evergreen oak seedling forests, the starting point of the first of the Cevennes valleys but still near to the lively part of the department, this renovated mill overlooking the fields and blending completely into its site, is a place for a comfortable, happy life as is proved by its millstream which acts as a permanent recreation area for a young family of mallard ducks. Should they so wish, the future owners could add the finishing touches to its restoration works and provide bed & breakfast or holiday accommodation to the numerous passing tourists.
