Castles / chateaux

17th century castle between the Morvan and the “Grands Crus”

Location

At the foot of the Morvan mountains, in the heart of a regional nature park, near to the most famous of Burgundy’s vineyards. There where the countryside is undulating and heavily wooded. The region attracts many tourists with its Gaulish, Roman and religious (Romanesque churches and abbeys) vestiges. Gastronomy is another attraction with its great Burgundy wines and several starred restaurants.
And yet this unspoilt countryside that time does not seem to have touched, is easily accessible via the French TGV train. Paris 75 minutes away, Geneva 105 minutes and Roissy airport 80 minutes away. Motorways and main roads also make access by car rapid.

Description

The origins of the property are not very clear. It was a 17th century hunting lodge which was extended in the 19th century. The current owners have recently renovated the entire building.
The ground floor comprises a vast entrance hall which is the keystone of the internal layout. It provides access to several reception rooms as well as a discreet back corridor leading to the kitchens and machine rooms. 17th and 19th century tiled floors, herringbone parquet flooring, stucco decorations, wood panelling, fireplaces and French doors.
The upper floors comprise suites and bedrooms, each with its own adjoining bathroom. One section of 1,615 sq ft awaits possible restoration.
The outbuildings include a dovecote, a bread oven, a shed and garages. Cellars run under the main dwelling. The property is situated on the side of a hill, on the edge of a forest, on a terrace dominating the surrounding countryside and is set in 44.5 acres of parklands.

Our opinion

This castle is situated on the borders of two regions: North Burgundy and South Burgundy which make up the cultural heritage of its environment. The property is in pristine condition, recently renovated in a modern, functional style in keeping with the building. It is, therefore, well adapted to current day life without having relinquished the traces of its past. This is a genuine alternative for all those who find castles to be unpractical for living in, austere and cold.
