Property formed from the wing of a castle in Burgundy
In Burgundy between the national regional park and the famous vine-growing hillsides. The countryside comprises wooded hills and small irregular-shaped fields separated by hedges and ditches. Nature rules and the region appears to have been spared urbanisation. And yet the area has been lived in since the distant past: numerous Gaulish and Roman vestiges pepper the countryside and a medium-sized town; thus creating a national cultural reputation. The region also is also known for its cutting-edge industries.
A French TGV train station is less than 20 minutes away: Paris in 75 minutes, Lyon in 35 minutes, Roissy Charles-de-Gaulle airport in 88 minutes.
The property is built in the heart of immaculately kept, terraced parklands with trees of over one hundred years old. A driveway leads from the village road to a courtyard of honour.
Above the castle are twenty or so hectares (49 acres) of jointly owned woods crisscrossed with bridle paths, an ornamental lake with its “picnic island” as well as a medieval-style tower. Almost 5,000 m² (1.24 acres) of land form unoverlooked, private parklands.
The lawn is bordered with trees of over one hundred years old and woods, with driveways, lighting, a swimming pool and terraces.
The dwelling, one of the castle’s wings, is accessed from the courtyard of honour via a horseshoe-shaped stairway or via a terrace in the parklands.
The ground floor features tall windows opening on to overhanging railings consisting of square stone bulbous balusters. The jambs are successively adorned with yellow stone and brick. The first floor is illuminated by tall windows opening on to overhanging wrought iron railings. Yellow stone pediment lintels.
The second floor, laid out under the rafters, is illuminated via roof dormers with yellow stone wrought jambs. The wing has a steep-sided, slate, hipped roof. Bull’s eye windows are set in the slope of the roof to illuminate the attic space situated above the second floor. Crests adorn the rooftop. The wing is flanked by a watch turret and a square tower.
The ground floor is given over to reception rooms that feature mosaic Art-deco-style floors, herringbone parquet flooring, wainscoting, ceilings with cornices, fireplaces and wall cupboards. The first floor comprises 4 bedrooms and a bathroom. Features include mosaic floors, herringbone parquet flooring, ceilings with cornices and marble fireplaces.
The second floor is partly laid out under the rafters and includes a lounge, a small kitchen, two bedrooms and a shower room.
The mezzanine comprises two bedrooms with a shower room, a games room and several machine rooms.
The unusual division of this property makes it possible to live in a castle of a reasonable size in a prestigious setting; a castle built by local nobility whose name conjures up grandeur and power in the minds of the local inhabitants. The architecture is sober; it has a certain refinement despite having all home comforts. Completely unoverlooked: the building and the parklands are private, only the woods are jointly owned. The easy access from Lyon and Paris is a real asset.
