Description

The property is situated on the outskirts of a village, on the banks of a river. The walled, 1.7 ha (4.2 acres) parklands are planted with trees of over one hundred years old and alternate lawns and copses.
The 19th century dwelling was built in the centre of the parklands; it is accessed via a lime tree-lined driveway. The castle is rectangular in shape. A bow window on the east side gives a superb view of the parklands whilst two small wings on the west side embrace the main entrance porch. The dwelling is flanked on both sides by an octagonal tower. The facades have symmetrical, neo-renaissance style windows. The steep-sided, slate roof features a fluted cornice.
The difference between the windows on each storey brings the Art-Deco style which was to become very fashionable half a century later to mind.
The dwelling comprises 4 stories, each spanning approx. 200 m² (2,153 sq ft), in addition to the attic space of approx. 100 m² (1,076 sq ft).
Ground floor: predominantly devoted to reception rooms that lead one into another and overlook the parklands. Entrance hall, vestibule with the stairwell of the main stairway, large lounge, library, small lounge and a suite. Floors are laid with Combianchien stone, patterned tiles or herringbone parquet flooring, walls are wallpapered or painted and sometimes lined with support panelling. Marble and natural stone fireplaces, indoor shutters, French doors.
First floor: 4 bedrooms, a lounge and a linen room. Two 1930’s style bathrooms. Strip pattern parquet flooring, marble fireplaces, and indoor shutters. It would be possible to create an additional bathroom.
Second floor, part of which has rooms with sloping ceilings: a kitchen, lounge/study and three bedrooms. Strip pattern parquet flooring, wall cupboards. Attic awaiting conversion.
Space under the rafters awaiting conversion (approx. 100 m² / 1,076 sq ft).
Garden floor opening on to the parklands on the east side. Kitchen, dining room and living room. Floors are laid with Combianchien stone and contemporary tiles. Natural stone fireplace and marble fireplace.
Miscellaneous utility rooms and machine rooms.
Service quarters:
- Traditional local farmhouse forming two independent dwellings, stables, barn, garage, tack room as well as various sheds.
- Small gardener’s cottage in the parklands to be restored.
- 4 recent loose boxes for horses.
- “Shower house” on the river bank.

Our opinion

The castle’s architecture is relatively avant-garde in style for the 19th century, considering that the overall Art-Deco style did not develop until more than half a century later: contemporary layout of the rooms, no needless corridors, no enormous rooms, and windows catching the natural light throughout the day.
Some of the rooms are still in their original state with their period furniture and the 1930’s style bathrooms are remarkably well preserved.
The property is harmonious; the castle is well situated in the heart of parklands that combine lawns with wilder copses, just the right amount of outbuildings, a wonderful river and an extremely pleasant unspoilt setting. The Paris / Lyon motorway is readily accessed so that it is relatively easy to travel on a regular basis without having to make any sacrifices as regards the setting.
