Classical late 18th, early 19th century castle in a 107ha or 34ha estate
250 km (156 miles) from Paris (235 / 147 of which are on motorway), 50 minutes from Blois, between forests and streams in a region full of picturesque countryside, the renowned architectural heritage of which attracts numerous visitors every year.
Close to the most beautiful of the Loire châteaux, almost within gunshot of the Sologne hunting grounds in a town that is the centre of a very well-known AOC (Appellation d'Origine Controlee) goat’s cheese, and is also famous for its Touraine and Valençay AOC wines.
The castle and its outbuildings stand in a 107 ha (264 acre) estate that includes 75 ha (185 acres) of woods, 14 ha (34 acres) of lakes, 12 ha (30 acres) of parklands bordered by a canal and 6 ha (15 acres) of farm land that slopes gently down to the river.
The facades of the castle clearly reveal two construction periods: the central projection, built of freestone at the end of the 18th century; the corner pavilions added at the beginning of the 19th century.
Three stories, each spanning approx. 330 m² (3,552 sq ft) give a total living area of approx. 1,000 m² (10,764 sq ft).
A vast entrance hall with a mosaic tiled floor and a rosette in the ceiling, leads to the left to a small library; then a large kitchen and its annex rooms, which take up the entire east pavilion. Opposite the entrance hall is the dining room, followed by a small lounge, giving adjoining access to the large yellow lounge that extends into the small blue lounge.
The first floor comprises a long corridor leading to eight bedrooms of varying surface areas. In the central part on the north side is a lounge as well as a former chapel and a former linen room.
The second floor features a former theatre, awaiting restoration, which takes up the central building. The pavilion on the west side was converted a few dozen years ago into a flat. The pavilion on the east side has six bedrooms.
Even though the roofs have always been correctly maintained, this one and a half century old building is in need of restoration works both inside and outside.
A gamekeeper’s cottage typical of the Sologne region, former stables awaiting renovation, a hunting lodge, a farm and its farm buildings complete the property.
An orangery and its former horticultural greenhouse, both awaiting restoration, are situated in the castle’s former vegetable garden.
Criss-crossed by a network of forest paths and tracks, the forest estate consists of 70% deciduous forest stand. It includes simple thickets (oak as the main species, acacia, birch, chestnut, hornbeam, alder, ash and aspen), conifer seedling thickets (scotch and maritime pine), blank areas/ accretions / lakes, deciduous seedling forest and popular groves. Five identification tags are assigned to the hunting of roe deer.
A most complete property including a sizeable forest estate, the adjoining farm land and three wonderful lakes make it possible to hunt and to go for walks in the middle of more than two hundred and sixty acres of unspoilt countryside. Not forgetting the canal and the river which are there for the eyes to feast on and to satisfy the fisherman who are not to be forgotten in this region renowned for its hunting. The buildings are also of great interest. There are a large variety of possible uses for the numerous outbuildings. The necessary restoration works will give the castle back the proud appearance it had two centuries ago and provide modern-day home comforts.
