19th century castle 35 km (22 miles) from Toulouse
The location of this property, 35 km (22 miles) from the centre of Toulouse, 40 km (25 miles) from Albi on the A68, access to which is just a few minutes away, is of particular interest. Set in the heart of a region that is rich from both a territorial (vines, undulating, wooded countryside, wide valleys, etc.) and architectural (medieval cities, outstanding religious and rural heritage, etc.) point of view, it owes its historical wealth to the trading of woad.
Wide entrance gates mark the entrance to the property. From this point, stretch landscaped parklands, designed in the 19th century in accordance with the environmental perception of the time. Varied vegetation, of a more or less exotic nature, narrow winding pathways to bring the culture of taking a stroll to the fore, a lake and delicately presented statues (putti, naiads, Medici vases, etc.) set on pedestals.
Repository of a particularly rich era, the castle is notably representative of a style that is not a style. With its abundance of architectural and ornamental repertoires, the property cleverly features the arts under the reign of Napoleon III.
In addition, the main facade overlooking the parklands sets narrow watch-turrets crowned with neo-gothic candle-snuffer roofs side by side with perfectly classical features (rustic stonework, dormers topped with triangular pediments and framed with original acroteria) against the regular, elegantly integrated trappings of brick and stone.
Accessed via the main entrance or via the double flight stairway, the through vestibule, like the reception rooms, bears witness to the chosen proximity with the parklands.
The interior layout remains simple and decorative features sober. Elegant fireplaces with neo-classical motifs inspired by the English decorative arts of the same era, interesting floors (Chantilly in the main lounge), a large stairway with harmonious curves, all exude the atmosphere of a page of history as regards its finesse and eclectism.
Mark of the finesse of a particularly rich era, this castle is an archetype of the architectural perception of the second half of the 19th century. A calm, romantic site in the indirect fashion of this era, its main asset, in addition to its numerous artistic features, is its geographical position. Still in its original condition, renovation works could be carried out to give charm and nobility back to this property.
