Palladian-style, listed chateau, 12 km (7.5 miles) from Nantes
In close proximity to Nantes, voted by the Times magazine as the most pleasant European town in which to live, with its international airport and the French TGV train that reaches Paris in just 2 hours. The capital is less than 4 hours away by road.
The property is situated just outside of the town in a rural setting where vines are grown for producing the grapes that make the fruity Muscadet wine and market gardeners still produce a type of lettuce known as corn salad for which Nantes is famous.
The ocean can be reached via the wonderful, chic port of Pornic, 35 minutes away by car.
The first glimpse of this outstanding house is to be had at the end of a long, plane tree-lined driveway. It is protected by its lands spanning approx. 9 ha (22 acres) comprising grasslands and a small pine tree wood. A stream borders the property to the south. Although near to the town, roe-deer and other wild animals are to be seen.
With its clear, decisive outline, this chateau, built in 1830 by an architect, follower of the great Palladio (16th century), is perfectly positioned on the site.
It faces an optimal south-east.
The very square design of the building gives a well-thought out internal layout that spans a floor surface area of approx. 230 m² (2,476 sq ft). Both main facades of the dressed stone building are in an excellent state of repair. The colour of the slate roof creates a superb contrast and gives great elegance to the property.
The building has French MH listing for its roofs and facades. The north entrance opens into the main room of the chateau, a majestic reception room with its fluted, false marble columns and black and white chessboard patterned tiled floor. This perfectly square room leads off to all the rooms on the ground floor like the atrium of a Roman villa.
Four Greek Doric columns on stylobates support the gallery and its rotunda situated above on the first floor, creating an open space, so that one room looks down or up into the other.
On the right of the reception room is the kitchen with a discreet access to the south-facing dining room. Able to comfortably seat 8 people, it has a fireplace.
The lounge runs the length of the south side with three French windows leading on to the terrace. Fireplace, stucco-wrought trumeau, oak parquet flooring and beige silk walls with wainscoting on the lower half. The high ceiling also features stucco work.
To the left of the reception room, 2 bedrooms separated by a bathroom, are connected by a short corridor. The suspended, winding stairway with granite steps and wrought iron railings leads up to the vast gallery around the rotunda. On the north side is a lounge with a view over the plane tree-lined driveway.
Set out around the gallery are 5 bedrooms, each with their own bath or shower room. All are luminous with views over the parklands, their fabric covered walls and carpet covered floors create a chic but comfortable look.
The outbuildings
To call this spacious complex, spanning approx. 500 m² (5,382 sq ft) to the east of the chateau, an outbuilding is a bit of an understatement. These former stables have been converted so perfectly and with such style that their humble origin is completely forgotten.
A first large room with its wonderful, exposed roofing framework has a superb 3 m (9.8 ft) wide fireplace, set in the middle of one of its 5 m (16.4 ft) high walls.
On the south side, the heated swimming pool enters by an archway, its Romanesque stairways attractively matching this archway. On one side of this complex is a kitchen, a back kitchen and a dining room. A second room, 20 m (66 ft) in length with the same high walls a sophisticated lighting system and a polished concrete floor.
To this unit is added a workshop, a storage room, a boiler room and lastly another bedroom with a shower room.
Both these areas have been built to professional function room standards.
A sophisticated architecture in an overly simple design using noble materials, all in an unspoilt setting very near to a wonderful town. It is a superbly comfortable residence in pristine condition.
This quality property is overflowing with potential: prestigious functions in the chateau, miscellaneous functions in the external complexes, restaurant, seminars or offices, luxurious bed & breakfast or quite simply a very beautiful home set in the peace and quiet near to Nantes. More than an “outstanding property”, this is a rare gem.
