Early 19th century chateau in 14 ha (34.6 acres) in the Upper Anjou region
Situated in the south of the French department of Mayenne, in a region that is a blend of nature and tradition providing lovers of the countryside with a rich heritage of Romanesque churches, chateaux and outstanding gardens.
Situated between the French departments of Maine, Loire and Sarthe, 270 km (169 miles) from Paris, 230 (144) of which are on the A11 motorway. An hour from Le Mans, 34 km (21 miles) from Laval, 17 km (11 miles) from Sablé-sur-Sarthe (French TGV train station with 75 minute links to Paris).
2 km (1.25 miles) from a small village with all amenities: doctors, schools, shops and a post office.
The property comprises parklands planted with trees of over one hundred years old, a lake, a vegetable garden, meadows and woods planted in 2007 and 2009, all contained in approx. 14 ha (34.6 acres).
The rectangular building spans three stories and a total of approx. 480 m² (5,166 sq ft) of living space.
The facade facing the parklands has a central Directoire-style pediment with return featuring an oculus. The symmetrically aligned windows are framed with freestone.
The slate roof features freestone, triangular pediment roof dormers.
The building was completely restored by its current owners.
The classic layout of the rooms includes:
A vast central entrance hall with a superb suspended, walnut, winding stairway leading upstairs at the end, on the right a library adjoins a lounge; on the left are a dining room, a kitchen, a pantry and two toilets. On a half floor behind the reception rooms are a linen room, a study and a rest room, all adjoining one another.
Seven bedrooms, five bathrooms, two shower rooms and six toilets are set out on either side of a long corridor.
The second floor with its slight sloping ceilings comprises an attic and the former maid’s bedrooms.
Numerous original features are still present and have been well preserved. They include terracotta tiled floors, oak herringbone parquet flooring, wall panelling and period fireplaces.
This proud-looking building with its sober and refined architecture clearly corresponds to its era.
The proximity of renowned tourist sites can but promote the idea of using the residence for a bed & breakfast activity and, why not, using the former caretaker’s cottage for holiday accommodation.
