17th & 18th century castle on the outskirts of Lyon

Location

On the outskirts of Lyon, in the heart of unspoilt, undulating countryside, planted with fruit trees and vines, giving an insight into the mildness of the Rhône valley climate. There where the villages are in yellow stone and where the prestigious Monts d’Or are just a stone’s throw away.
15 minutes from Bellecour square. 2.5 miles from the motorway, 2.5 from the station, 2 TGV train stations in Lyon, 20 minutes from Lyon Bron private and business airport and 30 minutes from Lyon Saint Exupéry international airport.

Description

Stronghold house during the Middle-Ages, the castle was converted in the 17th century into a pleasant leisure residence on the outskirts of Lyon. The commercial importance of the city during the Renaissance period and its ease of access from the property meant that the property was owned by several generations of rich merchants.
This yellow stone, rectangular building, flanked by three round towers spans three stories and approx. 7,750 sq ft of living space.
The ground floor comprises several adjoining reception rooms, accessed via two entrance halls and a back corridor. Features include herringbone parquet flooring, terracotta floor tiles, fireplaces, trumeaux, wainscoting and French ceilings.
The two upper floors comprise several bedrooms, most of which have adjoining bathrooms. Features include parquet flooring, terracotta floor tiles, fireplaces and French ceilings. Yellow stone chapel, once part of the fortifications. Outstanding frescoes dating from late 16th/early 17th century.
One and three quarter acres of landscaped parklands, planted with trees of over one hundred years old and featuring a swimming pool, several terraces and an ornamental lake with an automatic watering system and lighting.

Our opinion

Such unspoilt, pleasant and peaceful countryside so close to Lyon is most unusual. The castle is a wonderful example of 17th & 18th century architecture, moderately demonstrating its elegant sobriety and spaciousness. The current owner, a businessman, chose this haven as a home for his large family as it was close to his business activities in the centre of Lyon.
