Elegant castle built in 1860, creation and former residence of a 19th century well-known architect from the Lyonnais region.
Looking down on the Saône, the castle, under its steep-sided slate covered roof, is flanked by a square tower and a round turret. The building, perfectly restored in 2001, is a harmonious blend of stone and brick, forming a unit consistent with the style of Louis XIII. The façade of the north-west tower bears a statue of the Virgin Mary reiterating the affection of its builder for all things religious which would take him as far as to erect the village chapel.
The 6,458 sq ft of living space are spread out over three stories; the ground floor comprises 1,399 sq ft of adjoining pleasant and opulent reception rooms (“Versailles” parquet flooring, coffered and French ceilings, marble fireplace), and the two upper floors total 10 bedrooms and 7 bathrooms. The 861 sq ft attic with its exposed roofing framework and zinc roof dormers could be converted into additional living space. The basement includes a vaulted wine cellar, boiler room and storage rooms.

Sculptures of a dragon and Joan of Arc on romantic islands are reminders of the site’s history.
A two-storey dwelling, ideal accommodation for guests or caretakers, is to be found to the rear of the building. It comprises a 1,022 sq ft flat with a terrace and garden and an 807 sq ft room awaiting conversion on the ground floor. Further away in the grounds, in addition to the tennis court, a former 1,615 sq ft “charreterie” where carriages were once kept has been renovated as a seven car garage.
Our opinion
A site that is, obviously, brimming over with history due to the name of its illustrious builder and his awe-inspiring parklands.
With the possibility of extending the building by about 20%, this property gives any form of development free rein.
