Description

The origins of the property date back to the year 999. It was a country estate, with its own church, part of a noble’s farm. Over the centuries, the property continued to retain its priory function as it was passed down amongst miscellaneous abbeys and seigneuries.
The region not being particularly safe, the building underwent extensive fortifying modifications between the 11th and 12th centuries. Massive defensive towers were built and moats were dug.
During the Renaissance period, the priory was modernised, giving it is current configuration as it has since remained unchanged.

The property is set in the heart of a village, on the top of a hill. To the west is an inner Renaissance courtyard, to the east, a high stone walled garden. Meadow, swimming pool, tennis court and caretaker’s cottage.

The priory is an impressive, L-shaped, stone building comprising a ground floor and two upper floors, spanning approx. 1,000 m² (10,763 sq ft) of living space.
The ground floor includes reception rooms, lounges, a kitchen and old medieval kitchens, cellars and utility rooms.
The upper floors are given over to several suites and lounges, and accessed by means of a corkscrew stairway, housed in an octagonal tower.
The inside harbours numerous architectural elements that retrace the successive centuries: monumental fireplaces, stone flagstones and various features dating from the Middle-Ages, French ceilings, mullioned windows, parquet floors and Renaissance fireplaces.

Our opinion

The priory was restored by an architect from the “Batîments de France”, giving it an appearance that is, at times, unrefined but always authentic and in line with its rich past. The property exudes an unusual, comfortable atmosphere due to certain finishing touches such as the use of cements and contemporary door and window frames which could just as easily delight as disappoint, but will not leave any visitor indifferent. And furthermore, it is in an excellent setting.
