17th & 19th century castle
and its outbuildings
In a small town to the north of Vannes in the French department of Morbihan.
A tree-lined driveway leads from the main road up to the castle surrounded by its outbuildings and grasslands, all of which is set in woods.
Surrounded by almost 15 ha (37 acres) of forests and grasslands, three-quarters of the property comprises woods (fir, beech, chestnut and oak trees), the remaining quarter includes four ha (9.9 acres) of grasslands, two lakes and a stream.
The west and south parts of the castle were built during the 17th century; the north part and the tower were built in the 19th century.
Numerous outbuildings include an L-shaped building approx. 30 m (98 ft) long, comprising two converted sections, four garages, a workshop and another part awaiting conversion. A farm shed with a stable, a sheepfold, a kennel and an orchard/vegetable garden. A forest warden’s cottage awaiting renovation and a swimming pool.
The two eras in which the castle was built are clearly reflected in its different facades. The west side has classical 17th century architecture with local stone walls, quoins and granite stone window surrounds. The slate roof features semi-circular pediment roof dormers. The south side has a more sober style with dressed stone, a conical roofed tower and a roof featuring shed dormers.
Comprising a main building, flanked by two wings all with slate roofs and built over cellars, the castle spans a net floor surface area of approx. 650 m² (6,996 sq ft) over three stories.
The ground floor includes an entrance hall, a lounge-library, a music room, a 67 m² (721 sq ft) reception room with two fireplaces, a kitchen with a storage room, a study in the tower, a glass-fronted conservatory, bathroom and toilet facilities.
The first floor includes three bedrooms with bathrooms, a storage room, a private flat (with independent outside access) comprising a living room with fireplace, a dining room with a kitchen area, a bedroom in the tower and a toilet.
The second floor includes two bedrooms awaiting restoration, a room, a private flat (with independent outside access) comprising a living room with a kitchen area, two bedrooms (including one in the tower), a shower room and toilet.
The visible architectural complexity traces the various interventions experienced by the building. The current structure of the property, voluntarily intended for commercial purposes, is such that the splendour of a family residence could be restored, at little cost. A wonderful environment, an immaculately-kept setting, all with the benefit of a superb geographical situation.
