15th century castle in the French department of North Finistère

Location

North Finistère, just a few minutes from a town with 1,000 inhabitants.
15 km (9 miles) to the sea, approx. 500 km (310 miles) to Paris and 4 hours by French TGV train.

Description

This castle, dominating the valley, dates back to the 15th century. It is set in 9 ha (22 acres) of woods (one hundred year old chestnut and cedar trees) and 1.5 ha (3.7 acres) of parklands completely surrounded by walls in pristine condition.
Once a Seigneurial estate with origins going back to the end of the Middle Ages, the castle has journeyed down through the ages, successively home to noble and peasant families.
It can be accessed by completely private bridle paths as well as two long, tree-lined driveways. However, once the plant and tree barrier has been crossed, more walls appear.
The impressive, main residence stands beyond these walls. The east-facing facade opens on to a vast courtyard, bordered with former annex buildings, a monumental well in its centre. To the south, an esplanade which still bears the name “Allée de Madame”.
Parklands scattered with flower beds and planted with fruit trees and trees over one hundred years old stretch behind the dwelling. A small chapel dating from the 17th century stands in a corner of the parklands on the cliff-side.
To the west is a sloping wood, at the bottom of which once stood a large chapel, no longer in existence; a nearby cross is still standing.
At the foot of the cliffs, on the water’s edge is the Seigneurial mill awaiting restoration.

The castle currently spans approx. 600 m² (6,458 sq ft) of living space over three stories and comprises fifteen or so main rooms. The Great Hall (80 m² / 861 sq ft) with the main stairway, lounge, dining room, kitchen and laundry room. Eight bedrooms, two studies. Five fireplaces including two monumental made of granite. In the centre of the castle is the original chestnut wood stairway, leading to the two upper floors. Wine cellar and boiler room. The technical equipment and the central heating system are in a good state of repair and well maintained. The slate roof is recent.
It should be noted that two wells are used to provide free drinking water for the property.

Outbuildings: a 60 m² (630 sq ft) guard house in a good state of repair. A main room, a bedroom, attic space, shower room and toilet. Central heating. Two granite fireplaces and period oak beams. A second original house awaits renovation.

A 17th century chapel, complete with its altar.
Garage, tool shed, workshop.

Our opinion

Completely unoverlooked, this property has been extremely well-maintained both inside and out. The harmony of the setting, the home comforts, the spacious rooms, the high potential of the outbuildings, the possibility of restoring the mill, and finally, the dominant position over the valley are some of the many assets of this castle.
Leisure property, main residence, or even some form of hotel and catering activity are amongst the various purposes that could be envisaged for this versatile property.
