In the Caux region,
19th century chateau

Location

In the heart of the Pays de Caux, a natural region in Upper Normandy belonging to the Paris Basin, on a chalky plateau bordered by the cliffs along the Albâtre coast which is a great tourist attraction approx. 25 km (16 miles) away.
Rouen is 56 km (35 miles) away and Paris 180 km (113 miles), almost all of which is on motorway.
The village with approx. 900 inhabitants has all shops.

Description

The property
The property, walled along one of its sides, can be accessed by a country lane on the outskirts of a village. A driveway leads from the entrance barrier to the 17 ha (42 acre) estate planted with tall trees, including 5 ha (13.4 acres) of forest.

The chateau dominates the valley and the surrounding fields with a river running through. The unobstructed view stretches into the distance, to the buildings and a narrow road that winds through the countryside on other side of the village.
The view is, however, somewhat diminished from spring through till autumn by the density of the leaves on the trees.

The outbuildings with their slate roofs and brick facades comprise two loose boxes, a garden tool shed, a well and a two-storey dwelling awaiting restoration. They are situated to the left of the central building and cannot be seen from the chateau.

The chateau
This early 19th century building was once a hunting lodge, to which a turret was subsequently added at each of its ends.

Occupied during the last war, this family home has an Anglo-Norman-style facade, composed of a brick and smooth rendering bonding.

The residence has numerous small-paned windows that are closed by slatted shutters. The upstairs windows have suspended balconies. The large number of windows means that all the rooms are extremely luminous.

The ten steps of the double flight porch way adorned with a stone baluster handrail and sheltered by a glass canopy, lead up to the main entrance. An entrance door to the garden level is situated under this porch way. Its slate gable roof features internal roof dormers, brick chimney stacks, bell towers and spires. The turrets, however, are multi-sloped.

On the main facade side, a rounded, overhanging, perimeter wall supports the gravel terrace that leads to the chateau, and provides a view on a lower level over part of the property.

Carefully renovated in 2002 by the current owners, approx. 515 m² (5,543 sq ft) of living space spans 4 floors.

Our opinion

Soberness and elegance are the key words for this residence. There are no works to be scheduled following the purchase of this property. Ideally situated in the Caux region, between countryside and coast, this property makes a superb family home whether as a main residence or a holiday retreat. The site guarantees a provincial life in a very pleasant setting.
A building in which light is everywhere. There are more windows than there are solid walls.
The vast terrace in front of the chateau is ideal for large family gatherings.
Although imposing from the outside, the building is not oversized. It is a reasonable example of a “19th” and certainly most pleasant to live in.
