Large Louis XIII style castle and its outbuildings in 44.5 acres on the outskirts of Paris
Location
25 km (16 miles) east of Paris, this castle is between two towns with train lines taking 25 minutes to reach Paris’ Gare de l’Est.
Description
In a forest, 18ha (44.5 acres) of parklands with woods and plains, accessed from the main road via a long private driveway. In the centre stands a Louis XIII style residence with its typically French style outbuildings.
This castle with its simple lines, contrasts white stone with red brick with the blue black of its tall slate roofs crowned with finials. The corners of the brick walls are reinforced with stone toothed quoins. Five pediment roof dormers are aligned with the windows, which also have stone quoins, on all the lower floors. A porch way uniting the two wings that protrude on either side of the central building provides access to the parklands via a wide straight stairway.
The inside comprises 56 rooms with parquet flooring and 21 marble fireplaces. The impressive entrance hall has Italian-style mosaic flooring and a French ceiling; the main lounge has herringbone parquet flooring, the high-ceilinged library and dining room open predominantly on to the parklands.
The three upper floors total 27 bedrooms and utility rooms.
The outbuildings spanning a floor surface area of approx. 900 m² (9,688 sq ft) comprise a horseshoe-shaped building, built of brick and stone with an interlocking tile roof as well as barns and garages, 3 small houses in the outer bailey, an orangerie with a wrought iron and glass greenhouse. The caretakers’ cottage is at the entrance to the property.
Our opinion
A wonderful opportunity to be able to live in a castle so close to Paris. There is obviously good reason to think of running a commercial activity with access from the capital being so easy, and the surface area of the property so large, and how marvellous it would be to live as a family in such a property which could accommodate several generations.
