18th century castle in the Morvan countryside
In Morvan, a region in Burgundy, 260 km (163 miles) from Paris, approx. 1 hour from Dijon with its French TGV train station. Access via the A31-A38-A6. Dijon-Longvic airport.
Standing majestically in unspoilt countryside, the castle comprises a main building flanked by two symmetrical, protruding wings.
The front facade features a slightly protruding entrance, with its triangular pediment. It has a simple layout with aligned windows spanning three stories including a garret floor. Most of the bedrooms are set out in the wings; the kitchen is to be found in the left wing which formerly accommodated domestic staff.
The garret floor is still in its original condition whereas the rest of the castle has undergone several restoration works. The bedrooms have been renovated but the right wing awaits its restoration works, notably the repairing of ceilings and walls but no major works.
In the main building, is an entrance hall with its large central dressed-stone stairway and wrought iron railings, leading upstairs. Burgundy and Morvan blue-tinted stones laid in a diagonal pattern cover the floor.
The right-hand side of the ground floor is entirely given over to family use, with a study or lounge with a fireplace and a small lounge, a corridor leads to three bedrooms with parquet flooring, a bathroom and a toilet. This part is still in the same state in which it was found by the current owners and needs renovating.
On the left-hand side of the ground floor is the kitchen with its former fountain.
The cellars are accessible and a small stairway leads to the utility rooms, once accommodation for the domestic staff.
Upstairs in the right wing is an independent bedroom which is accessed via a door from the lounge in the rotunda; a wide corridor at the end of which is a bedroom with parquet flooring; a bathroom and another bedroom with a terracotta tiled floor and a French ceiling and a very spacious lounge; all are for guest use. Upstairs in the left wing, there are another two bedrooms, making a total of 7. The rear facade of the castle features a rotunda which initially gives an impression of austerity. It opens on to a suntrap terrace. Worthy of note in this rotunda are two lounges, one on the ground floor and the other upstairs. They have both been fully renovated and redecorated in accordance with their original style.
Outbuildings include a barn, a traditional farmhouse (used as a farm), a farm shed, an orangerie and a dovecote; all vestiges of a former working farm.
An opulent, 18th century castle with classical architecture; simple in its shape and decoration. The carcass appears to be in a good state of repair; the roof has been redone. The lounges have been carefully restored in accordance with old techniques and period materials but there are yet more restoration works to be continued on the inside.
