17th & 19th century castle in the Poitou region
In the heart of the Poitou-Charentes region, 420 km (262 miles) south of Paris, 13 km (8 miles) from the A10 motorway and less than 75 km (47 miles) from Poitiers-Biard airport with direct flights to London, Edinburgh, Barcelona and other European capitals. Barely 2 hours from Paris-Montparnasse via the French TGV train.
Situated 3 km (2 miles) from a village with 1,500 inhabitants and all shops and 25 minutes from a town with all amenities and a TGV train station.
The unspoilt surrounding countryside is made up of small meadows surrounded by thick hedges.
Built in 1880, the castle proudly dominates a hummock surrounded by majestic trees. The long, rectangular building is flanked at each corner by two square pavilions and its slightly protruding central projection features a horseshoe-shaped stairway. Spanning a surface area of 1,000 m² (10,764 sq ft), three stories rise above the basement cellars.
The entrance door is crowned with a coat-of-arms. Oak panelling in the entrance hall surrounds tapestries and is accompanied by a cornice featuring coats-of arms and a heavily carved oak stairway. To the right is a large 80 m² (861 sq ft) lounge with stucco decoration, numerous double-aspect windows, diagonal pear wood parquet flooring, a Carrara marble fireplace and a 4 m (13 ft) high ceiling, giving the room a most impressive appearance. The dining room features wonderful oak wainscoting on the walls, around the fireplace and on the ceiling.
Upstairs, the landing leads into a long, east-west through corridor. The 60 m² (646 sq ft) lounge on this floor has a fireplace and oak parquet flooring. The corridor leads off on both sides to the lounge, 5 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, coming to an end on the west side at the back stairway.
The numerous staff bedrooms on the top floor exude an 18th century aura and are full of charm. The small museum-like study houses historic documents relating to the castle. The exposed roofing framework in the attic is in an excellent state of repair.
The garden level comprises the former kitchens and storage rooms with the cellar underneath. A long corridor still contains the lockers used by the hunters of yesteryear.
The outbuildings, situated 100 m (109 yds) east of the castle, are as large as they are varied.
This large property has multiple possibilities: tourism, horse-riding, conferences. The character of a former world is preserved with all the magnificence of the entrance hall and lounges, by the wainscoting and oak parquet flooring. It is simply a case of adding modern-day comforts in order to be completely at ease and to take pleasurable advantage of the splendour of the interior. The entrance driveway and the one hundred year old trees do but enhance the impact.
