15th & 19th century castle, registered and listed as a French historic monument, in the Po
340 km (213 miles) from Paris, with a little over 300 (188) on motorway; 35 km (22 miles) from Châtellerault station (Paris in 80 minutes). 30 km (19 miles) from Poitiers airport with its scheduled flights to London.
In the Poitou-Charentes region, in the heart of undulating countryside with small fields and grasslands dotted with oak and chestnut tree woods. Peaceful, unspoilt surroundings, not far from Romanesque and medieval towns appreciated for their heritage and well-being. In the summer months many art and gastronomic festivals come to nearby areas.
A 32 ha (79 acre) estate of grasslands and woods including 50% of the width of the river for almost 1 km (0.6 miles). The discrete entrance surrounded by a wood leads up to the main gates. After the perimeter wall, in a large courtyard, visitors reach the boxwood and rose garden at the foot of the castle.
The initial sight of the buildings shows a multitude of towers, gables featuring large mullioned windows, machicolation and tall chimney stacks. A small courtyard sheltering a medieval garden has to be crossed on foot in order to gain entrance via the main door.
Construction ended in 1490. The painted decor of the oratory is still intact with scenes from the 15th century and allegorical figures. The alterations made in the 19th century were blended in with the original character. The totality of the castle is listed as a French historic monument and the oratory is registered as a French historic monument. The entire property is in pristine condition and some of the recently redone slate roofs are still covered by their 10 year guarantee.
There is approx. 900 m² (9,687 sq ft) of living space.
Entrance via the tower provides access to a vaulted room illuminated by stained glass windows representing cavalry scenes. A second door to the east leads directly to the well-laid out kitchen with modern, recently installed equipment, whilst retaining the historic features. The fireplace is fitted with a rotisserie mechanism. A door near to the fireplace opens on to a large terrace which runs along the south facade and overlooks the valley below. There is a small belvedere at the west end. The impressively sized dining room has a monumental fireplace featuring a coat-of-arms supported by two cherubs. The large lounge, also monumental, is full of atmosphere with the biggest fireplace in the castle and a painted French ceiling.
First floor: 7 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms as well as a study.
Second floor: 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
Two stairways lead to the two upper floors.
The outbuildings comprise stables, sheds for numerous purposes and former staff dwellings, an orangery and an old tower currently used as a billiards room. Two buildings forming a U to the north of the castle are separated by wrought iron gates which close a courtyard. The outbuildings are also listed.
The spectacular gardens are immaculately kept. Boxwood hedges surround rose bushes in a complex design in front of the castle. Another, no less impressive garden is on the west side; the design with its vast proportions is more geometrical.
This extraordinary building is situated in a setting that is no less extraordinary.
There are absolutely no nuisances, pollution or disgraceful visual features. The possibilities are many and varied, such as functions or the breeding of horses; the river is an asset that cannot be ignored as it could be used for irrigating the grasslands. Twelve bedrooms with an extremely well-equipped kitchen and majestic reception rooms open a variety of prospects.
And last, but not least, the gardens are outstanding.
