Numerous streams crisscross the chequered countryside before plunging into the crystal clear, fish-filled, often turquoise waters of the river Ain. Motorway exit 8 minutes away.
30 minutes from the centre of Lyon.
45 minutes from Geneva.
All amenities and schools 2 minutes away in the village.

Description

Situated in a region acting as a junction between the Kingdom of France and the Duchy of Savoy, the property was built for defensive purposes on a rocky peak, surrounded by a river, forming a natural barrier to any unexpected visitor. The castle alone was able to seal off the entire valley, main means of access between the Kingdom and the Duchy.
The clear water, fish-filled river is not deep. The property includes 250 m (820 ft) of private bank, highly conducive to fishing parties (trout). The terraces and defensive features are attributed to Le Nôtre and to Vauban; terrace surface area: 1.85 ha (4.57 acres).
The main dwelling, built in the 19th century on medieval foundations, comprises 3 stories of approx. 430 m² (4,628 sq ft) each.
The ground floor is devoted to adjoining reception rooms and has an amazing main dog leg stairway with two straight flights of stairs: first central flight, landing then second double flight, one parallel to the other. All in the purest of Viollet Leduc style.

The partly destroyed former stronghold house of the Dukes of Savoy comprises the foundations of the former keep and several vaulted rooms. Conversion possibilities.
Annex house of approx. 400 m² (4,305 sq ft) set up in an old medieval tower.
Former mill built on the edge of the river with a surface area of approx. 400 m² (4,305 sq ft). Currently in ruins but with reconstruction possibilities.
Outbuildings comprising former stables, barns and miscellaneous sheds.

Our opinion

The situation is extremely attractive with its natural beauty, its ease of access and the position of the building. The terraces and gardens together with the river banks only need maintaining to give them back their glory of yesteryear and to put the castle back on its original pedestal. The main dwelling is in need of some attention to bring it into line with a new way of life; the carcass is in a good state of repair. The annex buildings, very different in construction and of reasonable size, can all be put to good use. A group of buildings that could be become a genuine hamlet, straight out of the history books.
