17th century castle 30 minutes from Lyon in the Rhone-Alpes region

Location

In a French department that extends over 7,431 km² (2,869 sq miles) from the Crémieu plateau in the north to La Croix-Haute pass in the south and from the Rhone Valley in the east to the Oisans peaks (4,000 m / 13,123 ft) in the west.
The property is approx. 30 km (19 miles) from Lyon and in the immediate vicinity of 36 winter sports resorts. Access from Lyon and Geneva is easy due to the numerous motorways and main roads that crisscross the region, not forgetting the nearby train station with links to Lyon.
Nestled amongst meadows and farmlands, shops, all schools, sixth form colleges and all amenities are 8 km (5 miles) away.

Description

The castle was built in the 14th century and its carcass has been greatly redesigned over the years. The current owner has gathered information tracing back the history of the former owners to the end of the 18th century (this information will be passed on to the new owners).
The main building includes a ground floor and two stories, not counting the attic and a lounge with a panoramic view positioned on the roof.
The inside of the castle awaits restoration and is without heating and bathrooms. The electric wiring is not in line with current day standards and needs replacing. The roofs on both towers have been restored, the main roof redone, and all the roofs on the outbuildings have been redone or completely renovated according to good trade practices. Full details of the works and outstanding ten year guarantees will be given to the new owners.
Opposite the main stairway is the 8 m² (86 sq ft) entrance hall leading to the 45 m² (484 sq ft) lounge, vaulted ceiling, a 14 m² (151 sq ft) “chapel”, double vaulted ceiling, and a 15 m² (161 sq ft) hall area in the form of a corridor.
The dining room: 38 m² (409 sq ft) room with direct access to the kitchen, and a smoking room. Both these rooms have fireplaces.
The 26 m² (280 sq ft) kitchen has two-coloured floor tiles. It leads to a 9 m² (97 sq ft) back kitchen and the cellar. Both the kitchen and the back kitchen have direct access to the outside and the garden.
The towers: 2 small 9 m² (97 sq ft) rooms adjoining the smoking room, both in the towers, terracotta tile floors and a water pump in a cupboard.
1st floor right: 5 bedrooms, a 12 m² (129 sq ft) bathroom adjoins the 1st bedroom (34 m² / 366 sq ft), marble fireplace, a black fireplace in the 2nd bedroom (28 m² / 301 sq ft), a marble fireplace in the 3rd bedroom (34 m² / 366 sq ft), a white fireplace in the 4th bedroom (16 m² / 172 sq ft) and a grey one in the last bedroom (25 m² / 269 sq ft). Wide wooden floor boards or terracotta tiles cover the floors.
Two corridors lead to different rooms (approx. 20 m² / 215 sq ft each) with terracotta tile floors.
1st floor left: a small 13 m² (140 sq ft) corridor with octagonal floor tiles leads to 2 bedrooms (18 m² / 194 sq ft and 19 m² / 205 sq ft) both with a corner fireplace. At the end is a small 16 m² (172 sq ft) room with a vaulted ceiling and wooden flooring with a small wash-hand basin.
2nd floor (left and right): virtually identical to the 1st floor.
And finally, the top floor is accessed via a wooden stairway that passes under the central roofing framework. A 50 m² (538 sq ft) room overlooks the parklands via windows on 3 sides, taking the beholder’s eye far beyond the property’s meadows.

The outbuildings: a farm, a barn, a wine press, an orangery, a workshop and a caretaker’s cottage complete the property with a swimming pool.

Our opinion

The adventure of works started on this property, including the restoration of the roofs, the designing of a small French formal garden and modern day comforts such as a salt-water swimming pool, deserves to be continued.
This castle is so close to Lyon that it would be ideal as a main residence, complete with its unspoilt setting unaffected by Saint Exupéry airport which is 15 minutes away.
A site that could be used for accommodating numerous functions or a large family.
