Castles / chateaux

19th century neo-gothic castle to be completely restored, outbuildings and dwelling

Location

This property is located in the French department of Eure, 10 minutes from motorways, 63 miles from Paris, 9 miles from Evry, 44 miles from Rouen, and 72 miles from Deauville and the Normandy coast. The capital can be reached in an hour by train.

Description

42 acres of parklands, comprising plains and woods through which runs a tributary of the Eure, lie on either side of the castle and its outbuildings.
The main, 328 yd long, driveway leads from the entrance gates to one of the outbuildings which has been converted into a dwelling.
The vast, long abandoned castle was cleared throughout by the previous owner with the intention of implementing an ambitious redesigning project; this, however, never got off the ground.
In addition to the main dwelling with its floor surface area of 3,552 sq ft, the partly restored outbuildings include a room which is used as a study and a second dwelling spanning approx. 861 sq ft.
A cow shed and stables with large attic surface areas as well as a kennel comprise a section of the outbuildings still awaiting restoration.

The castle
History recounts that it was built at the end of the 19th century by a Marshall of the Empire, a talented artist who became a renowned soldier. It was also home to an illustrious family of writers.
The main brick-built facade, adorned with balusters, incorporates a wide, horseshoe-shaped stairway, leading up to the entrance.
A floor surface area of more than 16,145 sq ft under a tiled roof awaits complete restoration. Vast, spacious rooms span 5 stories with cellars in the basement (floor plans are available on request).
Despite the stripping suffered by this building, some of the original features have been preserved such as stained-glass windows and wainscoting, original fireplaces, mullioned windows and trumeaux.
Certain ceilings are adorned with groined arches with oculi and cross-springers.

The dwelling is located in the outbuildings and spans 2 stories with a living space of 3,605 sq ft.
Its large windows let in copious amounts of light. One of them leads directly out on to a south-facing terrace where there is a swimming pool and a view of the forest.
The surface area of the dwelling is divided into a room, a lounge, 6 bedrooms, 4 shower and bathrooms, a fully fitted kitchen and an attic space that is partly converted into a television lounge / billiards room.

Our opinion

A wonderful site set in plains and woods where hind and roe deer are frequently to be seen. Horse riding enthusiasts can easily accommodate their horses. The restoration of the outbuildings means that it is possible to live in this property.
