Anglo-Norman-style manor house from the Napoleon III period in Eure
2 hours from Paris, the A28 motorway exit is just 5 minutes away; Deauville baths are an hour away. The subprefecture of Bernay with all its shops, schools and its SNCF train station is 15 minutes away. There are local shops in the village which is 5 minutes away by car.
The property
With a surface area of 2 ha (4.94 acres), it has two entrances: one is accessed via the main road and the other via a country lane.
Each has its own driveway leading to the property: one is gravel, the other is grass. The gravel driveway runs alongside a lake amidst weeping willow, hazelnut, chestnut and other deciduous trees, bringing the Giverny gardens to mind.
Facing the house is a garage which was once a caretakers’ cottage.
The manor house
Built at the end of the 19th century, it has been put to various uses, including that of a hotel and a restaurant.
The ground floor is of stone and lime rendered breeze blocks.
Upstairs is half-timbering and fragmented tiles.
A former terrace was covered and closed in by the current owner who wanted the fragmented tiles to be symmetrical. The finials were custom-made in Bavent. The roof features local tiles.
The residence is accessed either via the kitchen or via the conservatory which opens into the lounge. This continues into the dining room and two bedrooms separated by a shower room.
Upstairs is a landing that leads right to a gallery, providing access to a bedroom and a bathroom as well as a small attic; and left to two other bedrooms and a bathroom with a dressing room.
Attic space that could be converted above one of the bedrooms completes the upstairs.
All the doors of the property are identical and the windows all have the same original shape.
The outbuildings
The garage, no doubt once a caretakers’ cottage still has two rooms, one of which has a wash-hand basin.
But today, garden tools are its sole residents.
This property is full of authenticity. It abounds with features which, for enthusiasts, are like arrows fired by Cupid.
However, all is not perfect; the decoration is in need of some attention, the grounds need putting in order and the main road can be noisy at times during the week.
But magic moments, such as mornings spent by the lake, make up for all its shortcomings.
