Location In the heart of the Périgord region, just a stone’s throw from Périgueux, its History and Art Capital, boasting no less than 39 classified or listed buildings and renowned for its famous fragrant and colourful markets in the old medieval-Renaissance city.
A ideal starting point when visiting the mecca of cultural and great outdoor tourism, and treating yourself to a gastronomical tour of the land of good restaurants: Sarlat, Lascaux and Les Eyzies are less than 50 miles away; the area around Bergerac with its “bastides” or fortified towns is less than 32 miles away; Brantôme, at the gates of the Périgord-Limousin National Regional Park, is 19 miles away; Hautefort is 34 miles away. Paris is only 4 hours by train, Toulouse 3.5 hours and Bordeaux 1.25 hours.
In an area that alternates wooded hills with green valleys, the castle, perched on a knoll, dominates the plain which stretches out in front of it, going down to the peaceful river Isle.
Description Bordered by its meticulously tended gardens, the castle was built in the 16th century on top of former wine storehouses. A floor was added in the 19th cen tury to accommodate the domestic staff.
Now perfectly restored, robust and flanked by its two impressive round towers, the castle spans 8,180 sq ft of living space over three floors (not including the cellar and attic). With the exception of the second floor which is decorated in a more contemporary style, though with the same attention to comfort as the rest, the insides are endowed with spacious, harmoniously laid out rooms and are full of the most wonderful features skilfully blended with the elegance and the spirit of the place: monumental fireplaces, exposed beams, diagonal parquet flooring, wainscoting and old hangings, etc. Amongst the main rooms: a vast 667 sq ft lounge, a dining room with a superb example of a Renaissance-style fireplace, a tearoom, 5 bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, a 355 sq ft kitchen, a study, etc. As for the third floor, it could be considered as a lavish 2,799 sq ft suite.
Around the outside: 3,229 sq ft of outbuildings await restoration (caretaker’s cottage, barn), stables able to accommodate 5 horses and a riding arena at the end of a bridle path, a swimming pool. A source-fed well. Oil-fired central heating. Security system with cameras.
Our opinion An ideal situation from which to explore the Dordogne.
40 acres of natural, predominantly wooded grounds which are ideal for walking, and a welcoming castle where one simply feels at home.
However, this property could easily provide the perfect setting for developing a hotel and catering business.
