Location In the area around Bergerac, entrance to the Périgord region, in Montaigne and Cyrano territory where the countryside extols its unspoilt surroundings, harbouring a wealth of memories open to hikers. Here, time, steeped in a rich and tumultuous past, goes from bastide (fortified town) to bastide and from mill to castle back up the “River of Hope”, or Dordogne, which knows all about battles and glorious times. A territory that seduces with its charm and its mild climate, where prestigious vineyards such as Monbazillac prosper, as do the unique flavours of the regional specialities whose names are like music to the ears of the greatest chefs: truffle, foie gras, confit, etc.
Less than 125 miles from Toulouse, 65 miles from Bordeaux, 40 miles from Sarlat and 22 miles from Périgueux.
Access to the region is made easier by the reliable railway network, and Bergerac airport with flights to Paris and Great Britain.
Description Once situated along the secluded “Route of the Lepers”, a little known path to the pilgrims’ shrine of Saint-Jacques-de-Compostella, the property is securely ramparted at the entrance to the small valley over which it dominates, with an extensive view over the pastoral and wooded countryside.
Saved from ruins, this 12th century sanctum, this former bastion said to have been worthy of being called an entrenched camp, is now perfectly restored with strict observance of the regional style and preservation of its authenticity.
In the heart of the surrounding 49 acres, it comprises a stronghold house, formerly defended via a drawbridge, the housing for which can still be seen on the facade, and a raised dwelling, adjoining at right angles, giving almost 3,229 sq ft of living space. Wonderful features: a “lauze” stone slab roof, beaten earth floor, narrow and flared roof dormers, wide, 15th and 18th century fireplaces, exposed beams, stone washtubs, chestnut wood parquet flooring, and more. Amongst the main rooms: spacious lounge and dining room, 5 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, a study and a superb kitchen.
Around the vast quadrangular courtyard, there are, within the confines, two guard towers which have been meticulously converted over two and three floors (lounges, bedrooms and bathrooms), and outbuildings (service and storage rooms, summer kitchen, equipped pool house), extending the entrance gates which are topped by a miniature castle.
Further away, a sheep-pen on 3 levels in the traditional Périgord-style converted into a guest house (lounge, dining room with fitted kitchen, 4 bedrooms, bathrooms, terrace, etc.), and another more recently constructed house for the possible accommodation of caretakers.
Additional features: 2 large swimming pools, a golf course, a small fishing lake, and a stream topped by the remnants of an old mill, witness to its seigneurial origins.
Our opinion Far from the hubbub of the fierce battles of the past, in the heart of its 49 continuous acres of woods and open fields, this wonderful leisure property is a haven dedicated to peace and quiet.
