Listed site: architectural feat inspired by Gothic and Renaissance styles

Location
Approx. 120 minutes from Toulouse, and scarcely 50 minutes from Brive-la-gaillard where the next French international airport is due to open shortly. In the heart of the Dordogne valley, listed as a Great National Site, link between the Black Périgord and the Haut Quercy, near to numerous caves, castles, museums and a few of the “most beautiful villages in France”.
Ideally perched on a rocky spur, the castle proudly displays its impressive appearance over a wide regional area marked by the beauty of the meandering “River of Hope” or Dordogne.

Description
The property is accessed via a long, steep, private driveway, tightly winding through the woods. Once at the top, the road forks leading to the castle esplanade and the outbuildings situated on a lower level. It was a more modest, 17th century noble dwelling which was to provide the base for works undertaken two centuries later to create this genuine architectural feat inspired by Gothic and Renaissance styles. The facades contain numerous remarkable features: mullioned and checkrail windows and dormers, geminated and ternated openings, pattée arrow-loops, bartizan, machiolation, etc. Flanked by its two round and rectangular towers and its over-sized watch-turret, the building encircles a grassy courtyard that backs on to the rock, a hollow part of which forms a vaulted cellar.

The lovingly kept and extremely comfortable interior includes approx. 10,763 sq ft of living space, spanning the three main stories. Endowed with spacious, harmoniously laid out rooms, it abounds in the most wonderful features in keeping with the elegance and character of the premises: vaulted rooms, spiral stairways, monumental fireplaces, beaten earth floors, period floor tiles, painted French ceilings, cross-ribbed vaults, old tapestries and wall hangings, stained glass windows, etc.
The main rooms on the ground floor include: two entrance halls, vestibule, lounge, dining room, vaulted kitchen and back kitchen, small study, three stairways, two of which are spiral, leading to the upper floors; on the first floor, four bedrooms with adjoining bathrooms, an impressive library, several rooms used by the domestic staff; on the second floor, five bedrooms, two of which share an adjoining bathroom, another bathroom, etc.

The property featuring 49.4 predominantly wooded acres which surround the building, its parklands with trees of over one hundred years old, its walkways and terraced gardens, outlined by the perimeter walls, has been listed as a Picturesque Site.

In addition: swimming pool with pool house; garage; completely renovated, 19th century dwelling with approx. 2,153 sq ft of living space and a view across the valley; barn including caretakers’ accommodation; stables and storeroom; vestiges of a former chapel.

Our opinion
Located as a genuine mirador above the Dordogne valley, this impressive castle undoubtedly takes advantage of an ideal situation which few other outstanding buildings in the area can boast of.
Undeniable qualities, obvious potential for an unusual, singular setting.
