Description
This site, founded on Roman ruins, has probably been fortified since the 10th century.
This independent fiefdom was attacked many times. Such wars between neighbours resulted in bloody altercations as is proved by the remains of broken weapons and bones found in the moats The castle is set in a hamlet, on a terrace dominating the surrounding countryside. The former outer bailey forms an extremely pleasant inner courtyard, awaiting restoration.

The castle comprises three round towers and a square keep, linked by walls to form an irregular quadrilateral. It was entirely surrounded by moats, most of which are currently filled in. The inner courtyard is accessed via an old fortified Roman gate to which a drawbridge was added in the Middle Ages. The towers and the keep comprise several rooms, illuminated by geminated openings in trilobal intrados tracery or loopholes, topped with cupola and ribbed vaults. Monumental fireplaces, sculptures, window seats and latrines.
Our opinion
Built in the 12th century, this castle has reached the 21st century without undergoing any modifications. It is living proof of the way of life in the Middle Ages and its little known history will surely reveal its secrets during its well-deserved renovation.
Although the building is currently severed in several places, the remaining elevations are robust.
This is a wonderful occasion for an enthusiast or purist to put life back into a history-filled site that has been neglected since the 16th century. Given the size of the task, it could also be an ideal place for combining contemporary architecture with the vestiges of a distant past.
