Location In a small village in the French department of Nièvre, close to the Loire, the biggest river in France and its Briare canal, circulation link over a thousand years old for raw materials and food products.
In this setting of utter serenity, 16 miles from Nevers, 3 hours from Paris, with access to the A6-A77 motorway and Nevers airport.
Description This entirely renovated 18th century castle and its outbuilding are surrounded by approx. 30 acres of land, half of which is meadows and the other half woods with two small lakes.
Apparently, the former holiday home of King Louis XVI, it was built in the 18th century with the relatively strict architecture of the late 18th, early 19th century. The main building, flanked by two octagonal turrets, spans three stories. The attic floor gives access to the terraces leading to the top floors of both turrets, from which there is a view of the surrounding countryside and the bell tower of the church in the village lower down.
The main entrance to the castle is at the rear of the building, even though a stairway decorates the main facade.
The doors on the ground floor lead through to the living rooms: a lounge, a large dining room and the kitchen. A stairway gives access to the upper floors of the main building which are dedicated to suites and bedrooms.
One of the turrets contains a study and an upstairs bedroom, whilst the other one has a billiards room, and another upstairs bedroom.
The castle has a net floor surface area of approx. 9,687 sq ft, of which almost 6,458 sq ft has been completely renovated.
The outbuilding is more recent than the castle and is used as a garage. It also contains a machine room and a storage room. Another of its rooms is used as an additional kitchen.
A swimming pool, approx. two years old, and a tennis court are also features of the pleasant, peaceful life of the owners of this property.
Our opinion The castle with its main 18th century building has a relatively strict architecture with no embellishments.
Its formal appearance comes from its towers, original in that they are octagonal in shape.
However, the simplicity of its architecture and the internal restoration which has been carried out make this building a wonderful residence for a family wanting to live in a castle in the country, or for a bed & breakfast activity.
The setting with its parklands, grasslands, forests and lakes is one of the property’s assets. The wood is also much appreciated as a raw material for maintaining temperatures inside these premises.
