Description This “house” or “castle” was built by the forge owners in the area. In 1710, a family moved there from the French department of Haute Marne and lived there for several generations. The property remained in the family until the beginning of the 20th century.
A 19th century family member, Ernest de Saint Vincent, put his coat-of-arms above the fireplace, thus giving the house its middle-class appearance. At the beginning of the 20th century, the house was extended by the addition of a neogothic-style tower and balcony. The roofs and windows were consequently modified. The house became a castle without any ennoblement.
Barns and an old outbuilding belonging to the forge are still part of the estate, through the beautiful parklands of which runs a fish-filled river. A beach was recently created on the river bank so that this site could be enjoyed to the full.
This neogothic-style castle comprises a tall, slim, round, battlemented tower with mullioned windows, topped by a conical roofed turret. It has a gothic-shaped entrance door with a joggled keystone that is not very pronounced. The triangular arched pediment over this door has pinnacles adorned with acanthus; it is supported by capitals with mossy foliage. Heraldry including a coat-of-arms and scrolls adorn the spandrel. We can see a forearm and its hand holding a croisier against a hatched background with a caption written in gothic writing: “conventus et sequanes”.
A balcony was added to the front of the main building’s façade, the balustrade of which is in an openwork geometric design with pinnacles.
Such decoration features in the oldest of the buildings with notably a chapel that possibly dates from the Renaissance period, with an ogival vault, decorated in ochre, blue and red and outlined in black. There are also small flower motifs. It should be specified that these are not period paintings.
An excellent state of repair exists throughout; the roofs were redone about a year ago. Restoration works have been tastefully carried out. The bedrooms have all necessary comforts. The property can be lived in straightaway without any works.
5,705 sq ft of living space, 9 comfortable bedrooms, lounges and a sufficient number of sanitary facilities. It is pleasant, spacious and luminous with approx. 7.4 acres of land.
Our opinion Letting yourself be lulled by the murmuring of the water, fording the river and strolling along the footpaths in the parklands, shaded by trees of over a hundred years old, such are the assets of this property, set in a beautiful countryside valley. The house’s architecture is pleasant despite its having been built at different times with many additions. It has, however, kept some remarkable gothic features: flamboyant gothic pinnacles, returns in the corners of the window architraves, the tower, its modern coats-of-arms and its windswept battlements, the dressed stone fireplace and the gothic chapel adorned with murals like the old chapels and churches in the region.
This property would lend itself to numerous projects including use as a holiday home, for bed & breakfast or as a main residence.
