Location In the south of the French department of Morbihan in a commune of 1,500 inhabitants.
313 miles from Paris, 1 hour by airplane, 4 hours by TGV train. Close to the Gulf of Morbihan.
Description Just a stone’s throw from the sea, this 13th & 16th century castle is set at the end of a long tree-lined driveway in almost 54.5 acres, in an unspoilt area of the south of Morbihan.
The thousand dove-holes in its dovecote are proof of the castle’s great importance when Brittany was still a sovereign state. The dwelling features triangular pediment roof dormers (one of which is adorned with a seigneurial coat-of-arms) and a round watch turret.
The castle currently spans almost 5,400 sq ft of living space, having been partly restored with care and in keeping with its history:
The ground floor comprises an entrance hall, a 1,345 sq ft servants’ hall with exposed beams and stone walls and a monumental fireplace, a pantry, a kitchen and a study. Floor tiles throughout.
The first floor, 1,345 sq ft under the roofing framework, comprises a lounge, a bedroom and a bathroom.
The second floor comprises two bedrooms, and two bathrooms and a last room under the rafters. Bread ovens are to be found in the extension of the pantry.
The gardens in full production surrounding the castle were reconstituted according to medieval documents, to the great delight of the current owners. A liturgical garden whose purpose was to provide flowers for the altar in the chapel which no longer exists, the medicinal plant garden for the apothecary, and the court pleasure garden for lifting the spirits of its inhabitants, with its cloister and its lawns, surrounded by water-filled moats.
An orchard and a vegetable garden.
An outbuilding in the form of a restored 3,300 sq ft orangerie.
Our opinion An unspoilt and peaceful setting in south Brittany, encompassing a partly but carefully renovated dwelling and outbuilding as well as the richly endowed gardens which make this place somewhere which is begging to be opened to the public. We believe that connoisseurs will be greatly attracted by the significant surface area of the reception rooms, the outbuildings and the gardens.
