| Location South Burgundy is undulating countryside, full of small irregular-shaped fields separated by hedges and ditches and world renowned vineyards. The region is at the forefront of modernity, with TGV trains putting Paris and Geneva within reach (90 minute journey).
The village with its 800 inhabitants is built of local stone, in the hollow of a small valley.
Shops with essential items are in the village with a larger town 10 minutes away.
Description The property:
The property is situated on the outskirts of the village. This unobtrusive castle in its unspoilt setting cannot be seen further than 100 metres away.
There is a direct entrance via a courtyard, facing the castle. Parklands on the west side are bordered to the north and south by two towers built just before the revolution. To the rear, a courtyard awaiting renovation opens on to the fortified service quarters. The north of the property is bordered by a river which runs alongside the fortifications. A water source borders the north side; once the moat it is now an ornamental pool looked down on by a terrace.
The castle:
The castle was built under Saint-Louis to rival the powerful Cluny Abbey. This rectangular-shaped property faces east/west and is flanked to the east by three towers, to the north of a former chapel.
It spans two stories of living space with a large atrium opening on to a terrace to the rear of the building.
The facade contains small original windows. New windows were added during the 18th century to let in more light. The building’s extremely thick walls are marked by the patina of time, having always been able to resist medieval attacks. The façade is peppered with loopholes. The inside was modernized over the years in order to adapt it to the ways of the different eras that existed, but numerous original decorative features are still to be found in the different rooms today. The current owners have made continual improvements to home comforts since they took over the premises forty years or so ago.
The service quarters:
These buildings were part of the fortifications. The outside walls are thick, peppered with loopholes, consolidated by two round towers and protected by a river acting as a moat.
This building was also redesigned in the 18th century. This section contains large floor surface areas spanning two stories which would lend themselves to numerous projects.
Our opinion This castle is in a most advantageous situation: the best of south Burgundy easily accessible from Lyon, Geneva and Paris. It is quite rare in this region to find a property from this era for sale.
It has the charm of an old 13th century dwelling which has been modernized over the years without being ruined and without losing an ounce of its authenticity. The castle is in an excellent state of repair. Renovation of the service quarters and its former outer bailey would enable the future owners to add their finishing touches to the unit.
This former royal seigneury is ready to become a family home.
