Location
This building, classified as a Historic Monument, is perched on a promontory (protected site). It dominates the Auxois-Morvan countryside for as far as the eye can see and its majestic size makes it one of the biggest 14th century churches in Burgundy.
Less than three hours from Paris by car, 50 miles from Dijon, two TGV train stations put this property at 90 minutes from Paris, A6-A38 access.
Description
Surrounded by 2.477 acres of parklands with a one hundred year old oak tree-lined driveway, it was founded in 1340 by the local Seigneur and consecrated to Sainte Trinity and the Virgin Mary in 1350.
The nave, wider than it is high, comprises three pointed barrel arch bays, the cross springers of which rest on the figure-decorated corbelling. The arms of the transept, as wide and as high as the nave, comprise a single cross ribbed bay, resting on the figured corbelling.
The chancel forms two ribbed bays, separated by a cross springer. The apse is straight and contains three long ogival windows, the bottoms of which are widely splayed; the middle one is higher than the other two.
To the right of the chancel is a small barrel chapel. Two small chapels open on to the transept; they are covered by an ogival barrel vault and have no sculpted features. Figured sculptures decorate the nave and transept corbelling.
The ground floor in the bell tower forms a small ribbed vaulted room. It is topped by four stories, separated by floorboards. The square bell tower, with projecting corner buttresses, has a 4 sided low-frame roof. Only the top floor has windows, with two ogival geminated windows in each of its sides. They are also divided horizontally by a mullion, with four wonderful sculpted gargoyles appearing at their base.
The masonry of the outside of the church is well preserved. Interesting features: one of the buttresses is flanked at its base by an arch-buttress, another, has a collection of plinths in its lower section.
The sole door into the church is set in the right-hand or south side. It is formed on the outside by four small columns on each side, the foliated capitals of which support four ogival-shaped tori, separated by deep arch moulding
Our opinion
A well constructed church in a splendid setting. Its beauty comes from its architectural homogeneity, its height and its imposing geographical situation.
The church proportions are harmonious and its internal decoration is far from ostentatious. This now silent site still resounds with the prayers of the past. It is ideally suited to cultural events and music festivals as it has the most amazing acoustics.
