16th century Renaissance castle, redesigned in the 17th century, 125 miles from Paris
200 km (125 miles) from Paris, near to Bourges and Sancerre, in the heart of the “Pays Fort” region, bordering the Sancerrois and Sologne hills, not far from a town renowned for its cultural dynamism, its summer flowers, its market and its local products.
The property
An estate of approx. 9ha16a38ca (22.64 acres) and its castle, on the outskirts of a village, at the end of a bridle path, bordered by a stretch of water. Two meadows in the south west section stretch from the castle right up to a forest.
The castle
This block layout, 16th century castle was redesigned in the 17th century with the addition of two corner pavilions. The rectangular, main building has a slate, gabled roof and is flanked by two round, asymmetrical towers with slate candlesnuffer roofs.
The square, corner pavilions have slate hipped roofs. The external walls are rendered and have dressed stone quoins and pilasters.
The castle spans three stories and a total of approx. 1,300 m² (513,993 sq ft) of living space.
The ground floor comprises a vast entrance hall that leads out to the parklands of the castle. Adjoining rooms include a first, double-aspect lounge, followed by a second and a third lounge, both with panelled walls. On the opposite side are a fourth, so-called “hunting” lounge, a library and a boot room.
The first floor is accessed via a winding, stone, two flight stairway, featuring 17th century tread lengths. A gallery that goes through the wings and runs along the rear facade of the central building leads to ten bedrooms which, decorated in traditional wall hangings, overlook the parklands and all have their own bath or shower rooms and toilets.
The second floor is divided into three bedrooms with bathrooms and toilets, a central attic of approx. 180 m² and converted attic space with its monumental roofing framing work.
Two secondary, wooden stairways lead upstairs, including one spiral stairway leading directly from the ground floor up to the third floor. And lastly, a back stairway provides access from the first floor to the attic.
The parklands
Comprising approx. 1 ha (2.47 acres) of woods and two meadows with a small river running through, the parklands and its castle stretch over a surface area of approx. 9 ha (22.24 acres). It borders a 30 ha (74 acre) communal forest estate.
Rights of way
The land is free of any rights of way and any rental agreements.
A lavish family home with sumptuous interior decoration and a variety of atmospheres. Although the external facades are in a good state of repair, they merit another finish. The surroundings are beautiful, the building has real architectural quality and its interiors, lived in all year round, are well kept.
The lack of outbuildings, which currently belong to a neighbour, makes it possible to use the main building without having to worry about buildings which very often put a severe strain on the budget required for the upkeep of such large properties.
