16th century manor house in 160 acres

Location

Along the most famous of routes with chateaux such as Chenonceau, Cheverny, Chambord, etc. A little over 9 miles from Tours. London is only 75 minutes by air; idem Paris but by TGV train and car.
In countryside that alternates small irregular-shaped fields separated by hedges and ditches with large areas of woodlands.

Description

Estate of 160 continuous acres: 74 acres of woods, 5 acres of parklands and 81 acres of rented lands.
A 16th century small castle stands in the centre at the end of a wonderful stone-lined driveway, hidden from onlookers by the woods. This old dwelling, flanked by its outbuildings with which it forms a vast courtyard of honour, is the archetype of the Touraine region manor house: a central building supported at each end by two round towers made of rubble stone and topped with candle-snuffer roofs, extended to the right by the former service quarters, and to the left by the wine-press hall.
In the centre, the ISMH listed entrance door
is flanked by Renaissance-style capital pilasters, and crowned by a drop arch lintel decorated with an S-shaped moulding at the keystone. It totals more than 6,226 sq ft of living space: a central entrance with elegant oak stairway leads upstairs. To the right: large lounge, followed by a small lounge, study, large room in the old kitchen, library in the old bakery, chapel converted into a bedroom, two other small bedrooms and 1 shower room.
To the left: dining room, pantry, kitchen and linen room.
Upstairs: 6 master bedrooms, 4 smaller bedrooms, and 4 bath/shower rooms. Despite some minor internal redesigning in the 19th century, many period features still remain: floors made of terracotta tiles or stone flagstones; indoor shutters, stone fireplaces, a former bakery with its two bread ovens, etc.
Vast split-level vaulted cellar under the dwelling.
In the South wing: caretakers’ accommodation, barn, tool and wood sheds. In the North wing: 4 small bedrooms, stables with tack room, workshop and vast barn. The farmyard is made up of a group of buildings that includes stables, barns, and pigsties.

Our opinion

The nature of the building, which has been in the same family for almost a century, has not been altered.
Despite the fact that the carcasses of the buildings are in good condition (new roofs), works will have to be undertaken to integrate modern comforts such as a proper heating system and comfortable bathrooms.
It is to be hoped that the future owner of these premises will manage to preserve the authenticity of the building.
