Location To the south of the French department of Seine & Marne, accessed from Paris via the A6, with the nearest town of Nemours just over 6 miles away.
By train: “Gare de Lyon” in Paris (45 mins by “Corail”), direction Nevers, getting off at Saint Pierre les Nemours.
In a small village on the edge of the Loing, between the river and the canal. The property is accessed from the lock and the towpath via a quiet driveway.
A long, gently sloping driveway leading from the lock seems to disappear before opening on to well-kept parklands running alongside the Loing. As if there was not enough water already, there is also a man-made lake for birds and even a swimming pool overlooking the river. These 8.65 acres of parklands, extending between the river and the canal and bordered by a railway line, are home to large numbers of aquatic wildlife. An outbuilding of the same construction as the manor house contains a guest house, a caretaker’s cottage, a garage and various storage rooms.
Description The manor house
A solid stone 18th century building, entirely renovated in 1964 by a master architect of civil buildings and national palaces. Major structural works were carried out at this time, giving it a new lease of life.
In the inside, the different levels, stairways hidden in towers, a vaulted dining room and a large reception room with its monumental fireplace are all reminders of the mill’s original structure. Water still runs beneath the building and can be seen through a glass flagstone.
Approx. 4,305 sq ft of living space spans 3 stories.
Ground floor: entrance opening on to the living room and the foot of the main stairway, large living room with an impressive alchemist’s fireplace, beams, black and white wavy-striped marble floor (work of art created especially for the mill in the 1960’s); laundry room, winter dining room communicating via three steps with the kitchen. On the other side of the large lounge: a summer dining room or second lounge opening on to the garden with its uncovered swimming pool.
The walls of the second tower form a stairway “library” leading to a study on the first floor.
The first floor, in the second tower, comprises a study with a roofing framework in the shape of a pagoda; the panoramic view from here takes in the entire estate. 3 bedrooms including one on a mezzanine floor, and a bathroom.
The second floor comprises two bedrooms and a bathroom.
The outbuildings
A large building, closing the paved entrance courtyard, contains a guest house, a caretaker’s cottage with a separate entrance, garages and storerooms.
Vestiges of a toll tower.
Outdoor swimming pool.
Miscellaneous points
The 32 mile long lateral canal of the Loing links the Briare and Orléans canals and, therefore, the Seine to the Loire. The vertical clearance of 11.5 ft and draught of 5.9 ft enables barges to navigate at a speed of 3.75 mph; it is not unusual to see pleasure boats travelling from the North Sea to the Mediterranean Sea go by. Stopovers at the moorings in the neighbouring village of Souppes cost €5 per night, €25 per week or €110 per month.
The exceptionally white stone from the quarries in Souppes was notably used for constructing the Sacré Coeur and the Sorbonne.
Our opinion A book by Simenon is brought to mind by the entrance via the” canal, the lock and the lock-keeper’s house. The railway, a little further up, adds to the atmosphere of the setting. Use of this Paris/Nevers line is infrequent, therefore the railway and its height causes little nuisance to the manor house, disturbed much more by the noise of the waterfall.
Certain interior decorations clearly from the “60’s” are of extremely good quality. There are many original features. The combination of styles is interesting. We would point out the library cleverly laid out in the stairway of a round tower. A most surprising property in pristine condition.
