Description The property :
On the outskirts of an outstanding small medieval “bastide” or fortified town, surrounded by a river, the property is the village “watchtower”. It is accessed via a 15th century stone bridge with two ogival arches. The 2.4 acre parklands, situated to the south of the castle, are bordered to the east and south by the river and to the west by a driveway. Majestic weeping willows, their branches floating on the water, line the river banks. Rectangular, tiled swimming pool. The main entrance, situated on the north side, opens on to a rectangular paved courtyard, complete with lawn.
The castle (approx. 10,764 sq ft) :
Built of stone in the 15th and probably at the start of the 16th century, the castle is U-shaped, flanked on the south-east corner by a round, freestanding tower, the base of which was the former wine-press, and on the diagonally opposite corner by a square tower housing the stairway. The ground floor is topped by three additional floors.
Original features are to be seen wherever the eye falls.
Outside: single or cross-bar mullioned windows, top floor crowned with a covered machiolation on supporting corbels, entrance door with its basket-handle arch and ogee gable end with a 45° pinnacle.
Inside: the horizontal roofing framework of the square tower, doors with semi-circular arches, loopholes, etc. No spiral stairway here, but a remarkable straight stone stairway alternating wide, regular steps and landings, a sign of the modern spirit of the builders of this dwelling.
Our opinion The fortunate presence of the medieval bastide has enabled this castle, left unscathed by time, to take advantage of almost unchanged surroundings.
It is clearly a “beautiful building” with architecture that is both sober and impressive. It has been regularly maintained since its recent restoration.
