Listed, 19th century castle, cider house and garden, 10 minutes from the Somme Bay beaches

Location

There where the edges of the land, the sea and sky meet and merge, on the Picardy coast, a wild, outstanding holiday retreat, between the unspoilt nature and the protected coastline.

Between sand dunes and marshland, between forests and grasslands, maritime Picardy also has some wonderful examples of architecture from different eras.
On the outskirts of a rural village, just a few miles from the sea near to the A16 and A28 motorways.

Between Calais and Rouen, 70 km (44 miles) from Amiens and approx. 200 km (125 miles) from Paris.

Less than 3 hours from the capital cities of the Benelux countries and the United Kingdom.

The setting is peaceful and the surrounding countryside invigorating.

Description

Most probably, originally a castle-farm dating from the second half of the 19th century, with its separate buildings and its surrounding lands.

The entrance to the property features wrought iron gates, topped with an archway finely adorned with initials and solidly hinged on two tall, octagonal, stone and brick pillars, each supporting a vessel.

Straight in front, on both sides of the circular driveway encircling the lawn, stands a dwelling spanning approx. 550 m² (5,920 sq ft). The middle of the facade featuring a tall triangular pediment adorned with a coat-of-arms in its centre, looks down on the entrance and the central windows.
At each end, the building flanked by two wings, protrudes and is extended by two half-towers, the tops of which feature an original hexagonal roof.

The slate roof which was recently redone, with its other different features of a Mansard roof, gives a certain elegance to the building.

At the end of one of the two wings, the building is extended by small brick extensions, one part of which is differentiated by half-timbered facades.

On the other side, a little further away is a long brick outbuilding with its recent slate roof. This shelters a former cider house as well as various sections formerly used for farming purposes.

Opposite the outbuilding, the majority of the partially wooded land stretches out to the rear of the castle.

There is another smaller, separate plot of land, surrounded by a brick wall behind the farm building.

The property is partly enclosed by walls.

The garden is partly wooded, especially on the main courtyard side, and contains ornamental shrubs, bushes, flower beds and other plants.

The surrounding countryside is both nearby and far away as it stretches for as far as the eye can see, widely given over to a scenery of grasslands and meadows, punctuated by a few trees, and separated by long hedges which conceal the small peaceful streams that indicate the proximity of the sea.

Our opinion

This reasonably sized dwelling with its varied and contrasting architectural features and simple but elegant proportions makes it easy to imagine wonderful family outings in the country.

The proximity of the sea and the European capital cities encourage us to envisage the possibility of a tourist development. The outbuildings are in its favour and the surrounding countryside is a great asset.
