Former convent turned castle
in the 19th century

Location

To the north of Lyon, on the outskirts of Beaujolais, by the side of the Saône. In a village in the middle of unspoilt countryside, easy to access and just a few minutes from the north of Lyon.
Motorway, TGV train station and medium-sized town in the vicinity.

Description

The origin and construction date of the property are not known. A convent before the French Revolution, it was, along with many others, partially destroyed in 1789. A family close to the emperor moved into the abandoned building during the First Empire, and undertook numerous works to transform it into a comfortable residence.
The property is organized so that its many courtyards and outside areas form the most superb parklands. Bridle path, former parade path, priest’s garden, orchard, bamboo grove and ornamental pool.
Although older, the dwelling now gives the impression of being a 19th century building, due to the works carried out during the First Empire. It is a rectangular building, flanked by two wings on the west facade, and extended by two lots of three high arches on the east side. It spans two stories and has approx. 5,974 sq ft of living space. The overall aspect of the architecture is sober.
The ground floor includes reception rooms as well as rooms of a family nature. The rooms are spacious without being oversized.
39.4’ x 16.4’ indoor swimming pool, heated to 30°C all year round.
The first floor is connected to the ground floor via three stairways and contains 7 comfortable bedrooms and a music room.

The outbuildings comprise a caretaker’s cottage, garages and a greenhouse. There are two cellars under the dwelling and under the garages.

Our opinion

The current owner, a big business man, chose this strategic situation as home for him and his family: rapid access and pleasant countryside. Significant renovation works were carried out in the aim of creating a comfortable, unassuming and refined, family residence such that further works are not likely to be necessary for 100 years.
