Location
Between Burgundy and the Rhône-Alpes, in unspoilt lands of lush grasslands and omnipresent forests, criss-crossed with sunken trails and hedges. The countryside is peppered with half-timbered farms, some of which are topped by sarrazine chimneys.
It is a land renowned for gastronomy with the famous Bresse chicken, and also, a prestigious wine-producing region peppered with evocative sounding names: Mercurey, Puligny Montrachet, etc.
The way of life is slow, away from the hustle and bustle of the large towns nearby: Lyon, Geneva, and Dijon. Paris and Geneva are 90 minutes away by TGV train (the station is 30 minutes away).
The A6 motorway is less than 10 miles away.
All amenities are a little over a mile away.
Description
The property
It is set deep in the country, amongst woods and fields, close to two lakes. The parklands of approx. 20 acres, planted with trees of over one hundred years old, blend into this landscape and become more and more managed the nearer we get to the castle, itself surrounded by vast, flower-filled lawns. Just over a mile of gravelled driveways give access to a lake, a meadow, a swimming pool and the outbuildings.
The property is accessed through automatic monumental, wrought-iron gates, hung on stone pillars.
The castle
It is built out of local bricks, made from the red clay soil in the area. It has three main facades, facing east/south/west; indoor life, therefore, follows the movement of the sun from dawn to dusk.
Its origins date from the early 16th century, at which time a rectangular castle flanked by a square tower was built. In the 19th century, major works were carried out to extend it and convert it into the classic-style which was extremely fashionable during this era. It is flanked to the south by two large square towers, connected by a corridor. Several ornamental towers are grafted on to the facade.
The castle was decorated with numerous features such as balconies, dressed-stone features, cornices and the windows were enlarged.
The castle spans approx. 10,764 sq ft of living space over 4 stories.
Our opinion
A country castle with modern-day home comforts. The decorative features are proof of its importance: numerous marble fireplaces, panelling on all the walls, decorated trumeaux and crystal chandeliers.
There are also some symbols of antique architecture, notably via numerous columns and the prevalence of straight lines. This does not mean, however, that the castle has repudiated its 16th century origins as is proved by certain fireplaces and the spiral stairway.
