Vine grower’s cottage built on 13th century foundations in Burgundy

Location

In the heart of southern Burgundy. The richness of its heritage makes the region stand out, not only because of its prestigious vineyards, from which come the world’s greatest white wines, and the wild, unspoilt scenery of its natural parks, but also because of its countless Romanesque churches that probably form the biggest museum in the world across the countryside. The property is built on the outskirts of a village, ideally situated between three medium-sized towns, with a French TGV train station and its direct line to Paris (75 minutes) and Geneva (105 minutes) only 15 km (9.5 miles) away.
There is fast easy access by car from Paris, the French Riviera and Switzerland.

Description

The origins of the property date back to the Middle-Ages. In the 13th century, it very probably started life as a monastery. However, the decades went by and the monastery was closed down.
Most probably left in a state of ruin for a long period, the property was acquired by a family of vine growers at the beginning of the 19th century. The vast cellars and its strategic position were the two main assets of the property. The past was swept away above the cellars, and a new construction ordered: a large, luxurious house with annex buildings for accommodating staff and storing equipment.
Set at the top of its land, the house dominates its 4,500 m² (1.11 acres) of parklands with a river running through the bottom of the valley. High stone walls enclose the property with its trees over a hundred years old, swimming pool with pool house, small bridge spanning the river and vegetable garden.
The T-shaped dwelling is built of stone and spans a surface area of approx. 360 m² (3,875 sq ft). It comprises a vast 130 m² (1,399 sq ft) lounge with an outstanding exposed roofing framework, a kitchen, a study and a library.
One wing is reserved for the owners of the property, another for the children. Various utility rooms complete the living quarters.
The interior decoration is sober: terracotta tile floors, exposed beams and roofing frameworks, parquet flooring and fireplaces, the rest being white.
There are several possibilities for extension.

The outbuildings comprising outstanding 13th century cellar with ogival vaults and flagstone flooring are completed by a wine cellar.
Independent studio flat, dovecote and various sheds.

Our opinion

Set in the middle of outstanding parklands, this reasonably-sized property has many facets, largely due to its association with several terraces and buildings.
Combining spaciousness with architectural quality, the impressive 13th century cellar and the vast lounge make this house particularly warm and welcoming. Development of a commercial activity is a possibility.
